If it went in then it has to come out. wasn't welded in so needn't be cut out....

Re: Projekt ohne namen
My reccommendation to cut is based on the overall condition of the donor car, one can only predict that it would be difficult to remove the steering shaft the normal way, if it is easy it is a bonus

Re: Projekt ohne namen
There is a coolar mounted to the top of the collapseble section which prevents it from being pulled out when the clamp nut and bolt is removed as well as the two bolts under the dash which holds the steering collumn to the body.
as this clamp (a horse shoe shaped piece of metal with a clear plastic collar) is only crimped to the steering collumn it can be pried loose with a big screw driver. this will allow the collumn to be extracted easily. there is no need to saw through anything.

Re: Projekt ohne namen
My daily drive has a 13mm nut on the inside by the u clamp. This yellow bugger has ROUND HEAD bolts, and how the heck l am to get them off, only Hitler knows. IMPI, the clamp under the tank is off, all that is left is for me to remove/release u-clamp inside the car by the knees.

Re: Projekt ohne namen
The bolts are similar to the ones on the "round rubber dick" which pine suggested should be cut as they are riveted inplace.

Re: Projekt ohne namen
As Impi said:
There is a horseshoe shaped part above the collapsible part of the steering shaft. This may look as if it could be part of the collapsible thingy, but can be taken off.
On late models, where the outer tube around the steering shaft is fixed inside car to bottom of dashboard, below the speedo, the "nuts" cannot be removed by 13mm spanner, as they are round. These were made round to make it more difficult for thieves to steal the car when steering wheel was locked. Think it is best to grind or cut these off, seeing that it was mentioned that the body will in any case be "recycled" (as in "cut up into pieces and sold as scrap metal, because of terminal cancer/rust" ).

Staying Aircooled is so much nicer.

Re: Projekt ohne namen
I have a grinder in hand and will be cutting away.
Option 1:
Slice bolt under the dash from inside so I may fit screwdriver and attempt to screw it off.
Option 2:
Cut around the u-clamp and pull out the clamp with the shaft.
Come hell or high waters, I have to get this steering shaft off so I may remove body from pan.
Pine, I will try to get pics of the body - won't be great quality due to it's location

Option 3;, just grind the round heads off, and damage nothing.........Hloni wrote:I have a grinder in hand and will be cutting away.

Some grinding and yankin yesterday, and today at 08h13, there was lift-off, thanx to some 3 dark handsome muscles!
Will post progress snaps once telkom comes to replace our line. We've been so kind that we even cleared some trees for them. Patiently we now wait, just like l've been waitin patiently for my videos since January.

Re: Projekt ohne namen
I had this thought this afternoon while driving through town going over some speed bumps.
How does one keep a beach buggy on the road? I mean, the beetle body is pretty heavy, and slamming a fg is cutting back about half the weight! Driving down the biways at 100km/h, a truck fully laden moving in the opposite direction at speeds higher than recommended whiskes past. Won't the buggy flip??
