have a very bad pic, but tell me what you see... the motor has definitely been built once before, but looks like it was a decent job - vw bearings, ks pistons .... what is the significance of the crank / flywheel?

Going thru tomorrow to inspect all the parts and make a list of whats required, and take the parts that requires machining away to be done. Will post some pics of hopefully much cleaner parts.....

OK so a small spanner in the works.... I have sent the case to be machined and ordered the pistons and exhaust... BUT I managed to pick up a universal case longblock in running order(allegedly)... I am very tempted to build the new block up with my parts and install it to get the car going, then I can build the original motor at my leisure...

time for an update...
have been very busy and in my quest for rocker arms, came across Bill and his workshop. I asked if he would consider putting the motor back together for me. He has agreed and I have delivered all the parts to him now. Today I went to collect the tin for painting and he is about to close the block. some pictures attached by way of an update. Overall the motor was in good nick, and is now balanced and will hopefully sing like a sewing machine. Glad I have gone this route because no amount of following the book can compete with the tips and tricks learnt over many years.
So far have purchased:
empi exhaust - the old one was welded and tired
sachs clutch - probably wont use it, the old one was like new..
pistons and sleeves, main bearings, big and small ends, cam bearings, all valves, exhaust valve guides, oil pump, new oil strainer so far

Type 3 blocks do love to do that

The engineering company should have checked that

I had all replaced with case savers for safety as this is a prone problem

O  Sorry I thought you were talking about the head studs

Strange that a casing stud has pulled

Mcd has done my casing and everything also and They checked all that for me

Uncle Bill has a strong hand

Was it a head stud or a case stud that pulled?

ok back on track. small delay from the pulled stud, but now everything is going smoothly. Tin is painted and back to Bill, he has now closed the block and heads are on. Happily no more stud issues. Just the oil breather to arrange and we should be up and running in a few days...
