I take it then that you bus will be getting the UK waxyoil treatment

? Tough luck on the admin issue, it never is plain sailing with these things.
You are just lucky to have found a nice solid rust free bus Dave, believe me, I'm pretty sure there are MANY ex SA rustbucket busses in the UK now.
Thanks for the post, keep us updated on the scene that side !

This is on the dash.
Am going to be getting that gold paint off - it's on the tacho, grab handle, indicator stalk and various bits and peices here and there as well - that'll be going once I get the van on the road.
The doors are solid and will be waxoyled later today before putting the window frames back in and getting ready for registration on Weds.

Yes, the PO seems to have gone to town with that gold paint. It's in the engine bay too if I remember correctly. Glad the bus has no/little rust Dave.

Its a brand name for a liquid way spray that is applied over rust, to prevent oxygen from getting to the rust, and in this way stopping it to rust more.
This wax then solidify s, and gives future protection. When parking in the sun, it flows to seal it self, thus giving protection to the parts that are not accessible other then a small hole drilled.
Hope this helps

Oh yes!! Getting new all new fuel lines this week.
It's at the DVLA tomorrow and hopefully will get registered for use on the road.
Waxoyl is horrible stuff that we use to rust proof things - think tar pit! It is a thick waxy oil that you have to heat to make viscous enough to apply - usually by putting the tin in hot water. Best way to apply is to spray it on. Once it's on it doesn't set as such, but stays quite sticky - it isn't for use anywhere that you might accidentally touch unless you had taken a panel off or were under the van. It's sort of self healing - in theory.
A few pics of the doors just before I re-fitted the windows. Amazing that there's no rust to speak of. Looks like the van was originally blue as there are other parts of the van that are this colour too. Just the one photo of the Waxoyl in place - it started raining and there was water gushing through the windowless door and the safaris. I reckon this bus has seen more rain in the last three weeks than it saw in its entire previous 48 years!!!

Got email today confirming registration
893
YUB
Shame that Y wasn't a D
Tax disc should be here tomorrow or Monday. I can't get plates made until I get the relevant paperwork though - legal requirement that you prove you are the owner of the vehicle and not just having a pair made so you can go fill up with petrol and drive off - becoming quite common now over here - at £1.40 a litre (16ZAR) it's hardly surprising really!
Tempted to print some off on the 'puter and laminate them for the time being

Birth cerificate arrived today.
Van was, according to them, originally a 214 delivery van - do they ever get these wrong? Although the colour isn't listed on the cert it was dove blue as I've found a few patches under the carpets and in crevices that weren't painted over and the colour options for that batch were dove blue, light grey or ivory all with grey upholstery.
The M-codes are shown as this
M402/482 CKD (completely knock down) production
The date it was built on 18th April 1963 and it left the factory the next day
Originally had a 42DIN-PS 1.5l engine
That's it!
Still raining here and haven't got plates yet so van still hasn't been out on the road. Got some new fuel hose but am not messing about in the rain so that's still to be done.
Happy days

Have been out a few times now without problems. Brakes need fine tuning a bit. Still starts first time every time. Accidentally knocked two fuses out and put them back wrong way - the 5amp blew and everything stopped - lights, wipers and engine. Not a problem in back, but wouldn't like that to happen on motorway - especially with a dark green van on a rainy night. I know the fuse was too small but if there was a fault in something that caused the right sized fuse to go it'd knock everything off - not good!
Took out the camper interior and found two nasty rust holes in the floor thanks to the leaking window seals. Must have been leaking for years - completely gone through an area about six inches by two in both cases. The interior had been removed when it was painted yet nothing done about the holes which is a bit slack. Bad leak from rear window too - that was hidden by shelf and mat - luckily only surface rust. So another £100 to be spent on rubbers. The new cab door rubbers are pretty much ok - one of the quarter lights doesn't fit flush and leaks - so thats been sealed with black silicon.
The van now has a full width rock and roll bed and ply floor - which will have to come out again when the welding is done. Three point belts in front and 3 lapbelts in belt.
All of that horrible gold highlighting has gone from cab. Looks miles better. The knee guard is black - reflection making it look lighter.
Just need to get the same done in engine bay. That fuel line and filter were sorted before I went anywhere.

Yes; quite often it seems.

It would have been painted in South Africa, which had a different colour selection (including dove blue).
