The original (Porsche) gearbox has a collar that kept the rubber bush from moving. I mimicked it by fitting a washer around the "nose". I machined some of the bracing away to be able to move the washer closed to the main body, and then fitted an extended sleeve behind it to keep it in place.

Piet good job on the mounting trail and error prevail :D

Not to sure if I mentioned that a Split bus nose cone the Hockey Stick comes out lower than on a Beetle
so if space and the Angle of the Beetle nose cone craeted angled Box you could try a Splt bus nose Cone and Hockey stick

I didn't know that there were differences like that. I picked this one because it looked stronger, keeping in mind the way I wamt to mount it. But if the hockey stick sits lower down, surely the circle in swings around will be different too? So it will not work with the SP gearbox or will it?

But surely the hockey stick will not reach some of the selectors, and others will be too close? BTW, mine looks like the one on the left, which seems lower that the one on the right. I will have to try it out tonight.

This is what I like about this forum: so much knowledge in one place! Mine is definitely the one on the RIGHT in the picture above, ie the one with the hockey stick sitting higher in the nose cone.

So now I have 2 questions:
  • Will the gear selection work as it should with the hockey stick in a different place?
  • Does anyone have a split bus nose cone lying around for me?

I know what you mean about, in theory, the swing of the hockey stick.

In practise, it is spaced/positioned so that this is no problem. You will need the different hockey stick as well together with the nosecone.

This is also a way to adapt a later gearbox for use in an early beetle. (Using nosecone + hockey stick from a split kombi).

As Dawie mentioned and in my Reply if you use the Split bus nose cone you need to use the Bent looking Hockey stick of a Split bus

the Nose Cones of a split bus is rare I had a mate of mine bring me 3 from the USA and I pd R1800 each and R1300 for each Hockey stick
If you interrested I can pass one set on to you for some $$

Yes the Split bus nose cone fits like a Glove on the SP Box
Only thing you need to make sure of is that when any 2bolt nose cone even your one you got there is bolted on to the Back of the Gearbox
make sure as you tighten you turn the Spigot shaft and make sure it does not Tighten up
Reason is the 3 bolt nose cones have a small angel cut that Clears the Back Main shaft Bearing Plastic Cage and the 2 Bolt does not
Then you just with a Die Grinder grind a Small Angeld taper in the Round part of the Nose cone

I have found this a few times in the Past the People fit later model Transmissions in Earlier Chassis that uses the 2 Bolt nose Cone then the Transmission does not last long as the Main shaft bearing cage can not turn with the Bearing as it is Pinched down with the Not clearanced nose cone
and then the Main shaft bearing Collaps in the back
Creating transmission failure

Thanks Pierre. In my mind the 3 selectors were sitting in a perfect circle around the axis of the hockey stick, but I realize now that is not true. And as you and Dawie said, that makes it possible to fit the same basic box to different models. Those Germans were a clever bunch! I'm not sure what you are refering as 2 and 3 bolt cones? Btw, mine is the 113 version. At more than R3k for the earlier version I think I will stick with the one I have. But it was interesting to learn of the differences

Looking at the thread, I realized I haven't added anything for ages. The reason is that I haven't done anything for ages. However, Retrovan's astonishing progress with the MeFusco inspired me to move the car closer to home so that I can spend some time on it. I hope everyone had a blessed Christmas.
