Newbie Question thread: '78 bay exec

So i bought the rubber set from Pro Auto Rubber as I gave up on some of the overseas sites as they didnt have stock of everything I wanted. I will be using the rubbers for the side windows, rear window and windscreen from the PAR set but will be ordering the cab door rubbers and felt bits, sliding door and rear door rubbers from Europe.

reports on the PAR set have been 50/50 positive, so not sure if I have made the right choice but I suppose the Pro Auto rubbers can be replaced in future if I see they are not up to the task. I also bought some rubber mat to redo the sliding door step and drivers compartment rubber mat. Does anyone have a pattern or rubber mat from the cab that I could borrow to trace or are these mats available to buy new?

I would like to get new brake discs, pads, drums and bearings all around. Where is the best place to get these?

I am really battling to find the executive beading for a late model bay (low light beading is easy to find funny enough) and some of my set is not in great condition so we have decided to not put back the beading and the holes will be filled in, so if anyone needs some beading make me an offer for it and I may be convinced to let it go.

Im also thinking of arranging a breakfast run perhaps on a Sunday morning in the next few weeks (maybe first weekend in March) when I get the bus back (although it will be far from finished); mainly because if we do it alone and it breaks down it will be good to have back up.......
Just kidding.
Would anyone have any interest in joining us?


PS. I saw a VW Camper in Randpark Ridge. Is it a member here?

Bruce, I used pro auto's rubbers plenty, even from the days when I rebuilt my 356 Speedster. Theya re the only locally available supplier, but the FIRST CHANCE you get to replace them, especially the Windscreen\window rubbers, I suggest you do so. I saw all winter how I got water INSIDE my windscreen between the glass and rubber!, which would then definitely start the proverbial rusting of the tin under the windscreen.

I got a proper German Rubber from Tony on his last order, and got Glasfit to install it, and since then, I've never seen water penetrate inside. it's also wider, and sites properly over the flange and the body, it won't allow any moisture or water near that area.

It is 3 times the price, but it's MUCH better at doing the job properly bud.. No matter how much you spend on getting your body all nice and sprayed, if your rubbers suck, in 12 months you'll end up spending AGAIN.

You have made a big mistake buying those from Pro Auto Rubber. They don't work properly.

Did you give Jacques a call from Vintage Kombi? He carries the correct rubbers in stock here in SA.

Thanks Sean. I did email him with no response but i guess i should have called.

These rubbers will now be temporary until the ones from the UK arrive. The Bus will be stored indoors and will not be driven in the rain much.....but then again i need to worry about when i wash it I suppose.

Ok. Wont fit the windows until the European ones arrive. Will donate them to a worthy cause rather.

Just been to the panel shop and they have suggested I keep the beading also. Does anyone know if the clips (male side and female side) are available and if there is anyone that can recondition this beading?

Ive ordered a few bits and pieces from Europe. One of the items I ordered was a battery tray as I have discovered mine is rusted and it has big holes in it.
What is the easiest way to fit this and does it need to be welded in place once the old one has been cut out?

Looks like I will be getting the bus back in about 3 weeks due to all the rust that has been found and needing to be repaired. Also found that the bus has possibly been resprayed in the past. Seems the original colour was a beige colour. Is there anyway for me to check this?

Can someone please tell me what the item is in the red circle in the picture below please. Looks like a cooling or extraction type system.

Also i have a vacuum pipe, circle in yellow in the below picture that is hanging. Where is this supposed to be connected?

Ps. I know this is a Fuel injected motor but i have seen these on carb fed motors also.

That is the fan for your heater/demister system, it feeds the heat exchangers.

Those pipes are not vacuum. It's ventilation coming from the fuel tank. They combine and vents into the air filter.

While talking about that picture, the brown board with holes in it above the engin on my bus is really in a bad state. Would there be any harm in replacing that with proper foil and "sponge" used on the inside of modern vehicles bonnets?
