First time getting axles on a gearbox. Probably not ideal mixing old, new and aftermarket parts.

Re: Inner spacer and bearing gap question on axle
Did you replace the cover retaining screws, no 13 ?
Ive been all over looking for new ones as the heads of the ones I have are damaged and some are almost round.

Re: Inner spacer and bearing gap question on axle
I was fortunate enough to re-use the original bolts. They normally take a 14mm spanner, and has a fairly flat head. Finding an exact match, will be difficult, unless you find original bolts from a donor gearbox.
You should be able to find replacement bolts, with the correct thread, at an engineering supplies store (probably with 13mm head though). Just make sure they are high tensile (go for 12.9 grade), as they hold the bearing and ultimately the axle in its place. They get torqued to 58Nm.

Re: Inner spacer and bearing gap question on axle
if you want grade 12.9, just buy cap screws, they are usually 12.9

Re: Beetle cross shaft parts for late box
Went out Saturday and got the cross fork bits, bushes, bearing, guide sleeve etc for "late" gearbox.
After noticing the cap under the return spring didnt fit I realized I had the wrong parts.
The box is SFAS, anyone know the part numbers/place where I can get the correct parts?
If I have it right I should be getting the 20mm shaft and kit and not the 16mm.
Will this broken off piece cause any issues for the return spring ?

Re: Inner spacer and bearing gap question on axle
the spring pushes on the flat and on the fork, so it only goes around that broken piece. It should be fine.
You might have an issue with the seal though. Which shouldnt be too much of a problem as long as the bush and inner seal are still in place. If you can still fit the outer seal and you arent too happy with it, you could put down a layer of epoxy to remake the sleeve - just a thought/suggestion

Re: SFAS - Beetle cross shaft parts for late box
Tried FFR and Goeie Hoop for the SFAS box clutch shaft, arm and bushing kit. No luck
Any other local places I can try ?
Looking for these:

Re: SFAS - Beetle cross shaft parts for late box
You will also need a sleeve (pic below) which will fit over the broken piece of your gearbox. The spring fits over the sleeve.
You will need a 20mm kit for a late gearbox, and a 16mm kit for an early gearbox.
Don't know where you will find kits locally, but you can have bronze bushes machined, and the rest you should find at a second hand parts supplier.

The problem is that the 16mm kits are also referred to as 'late' .fourier wrote: Tue May 15, 2018 9:46 pm You will also need a sleeve (pic below) which will fit over the broken piece of your gearbox. The spring fits over the sleeve.

Went to Goeie hoop again yesterday, they have two shafts, one listed as early beetle and one listed as late beetle/kombi 1600 late. Both are 16mm.
The late parts at FFR are also 16mm.

Re: SFAS - Beetle cross shaft parts for late box
In the pic below, you will see the late shaft (20mm) on the left, and the early (16mm) on the right.

Best is to measure the size of your clutch release shaft. Then you'll know which kit to buy, irrespective of what the salesman chooses to call it.

Re: SFAS - Beetle cross shaft parts for late box
Managed to get the correct shaft and new bushing kit. Replaced the smaller bush in the gearbox and fitted everything.

When taking the nut off to get the bowden tube bracket on the stud just pulled out, completely stripped inside and seems like it was just held on by some gasket maker sort of stuff. Rethread and stuck a bolt in, looks a bit crap but it works.
