the high rpm "break in" is for a new cam
rev it once or twice to make sure it gets a little oil and then drive

I decided to replace the leaking main and transmission seals while the engine is out.

If you don’t have the original Beetle spark plug wires, or are cheap like me, you can use Bougi wires and add a little rubber disk to seal the hole:

Another headache for me is to find a properly fitting oil breather hose. I wanted cloth covered 1/2inch hose, but couldn’t find it, so I resorted to using general purpose hose. The problem is that it’s too stiff and puts too much tension on the airfilter fitting. A plastic irrigation elbow fitting sorted it out:
