52 idle is fine, how do you know your carbs are running rich? is ther plenty black smoke? tell more, Duke as mentioned previously on this post will be able to sort the carbs for you.

well...there isn't black smoke, but the exhaust is black inside, and there is the backfiring...
oh, I though Duke only has jets...sweet man...

Turn out the mixture screws a couple more turns and take it from there, that should help the back firing. Twin carbs will allways run a little rich their CO omittions will be a little higher than if running a single carb, they just are like that, if you have to get the CO 100% then the carbs will not run 100%.
Maybe you should come around to my place and we can have a look at what is going on, where are you?
