Welcome Jay, Where abouts are you in Cape Town. This is a good site to get info and then when you finished your buggy you can join thw Beach buggy club which is based in Melkbos and have buggy runs once a month.

Hi to All
Peter, a newbie as of 28 November 2009 introducing himself as per the practice !
I have owned a 1960 Karmann Ghia convertible left hand drive since 1994.
It was fully body-off restored to A1 condition by Ernie van der Toorn over 1997 - 1998.
Since then it has driven about 50km and is going back on the road because it needs to !
I also owned a 1956 Oval window Beetle until selling it in 2005 to a fellow SA Beetle enthusiast.
I will post photographs of the full step-by-step restoration process soon.
Peter

Hey guys. I'm Dan, another new comer. I'm in the process of restoring my '57 Oval, well i've been trying to do just that for the 6 years i've had it, but just never seem to get around to it. It's the third beetle i've owned, and definately the most precious. Stock standard with 6Volt electical system and 1100 motor. I joined this forum to share my restoration process with other beetle lovers and to hopefully find some of the parts and advice here that i can't seem to get anywhere else. Like Semaphores for instance, most people don't even know what they are, let alone where you can find them.
Anywayz, that's Dan, and this is me introducing myself.

Hi There
my name is Pierre Oosthuizen and I stay in Kommetjie in the western cape .I have had various beetle models and currently have a 1600 beamish bug that the engine has been rebuilt .This is with larger rings and pistons , cost a packet and still does not run well .Have got to the stage where it seems to be the carb ( solex 34 pict 3 ) am now sourcing to get good second hand one .Perhaps this will solve the problem .Will keep you guys up to date .This beach buggy is used to tow boat to launch and backfires big time and the exhaust is pitch black with heavy fuel consumption .Have had the timing checked to be spot on .It could be exhaust leaking or inlet manifold leaking or even worse the rubber boots on the inlet manifold .I will get to the bottom of this .
Perhaps you guys can recommend a good beetle mechanic in the south peninsula close to Fish Hoek / noordhoek / Kommetjie
Thanks so much
Best for now
Pierre
