i just got flamed.....hehehehe

I have been a Beetle enthusiast for 12 years now. After n matriculated i relocated to Cape Town. I spent most of my time in "paperweight shops" buying and sourcing beetle magazines. i must say that my collection is pretty hectic. This is how i killed time, i studied those magazine from front to back and i must say that i have sound knowledge of flat 4's and customizing. (theory not practical)

My dream beetle is a pre '67 slammed to the floor with 15 inch Fuchs or 17 inch D-Cup Porsche rims. The motor will be fitted with a big bore kit and dual carbs.

Thanks Weti - not sure what motor to do. I'd like to have somewhere in the region of 80-90kW and I am going to spend time researching the best way to do this - my only prerequisite is that it will be a VW flat 4 aircooled motor - I am not into conversions.

I went over the car with my Dad last night, drawing up a list of everything that needs to be done - and that list is getting long. It may be a bit idealistic, but I think I am going to break my project down into stages with the start of each stage being dependent on having the cash to begin & complete. As a point of principle I'd also like to drive the car, not have it in pieces for years, so I will only start major pieces of work when the cash is there. Stage 1 no problem, Stage 2 still trying to hide the cash away from my wife, Stage 3 is a way off.

I am quite lucky that the car was resprayed about 13 years ago in the original blue. The few rust spots that reappeared were sorted out and resrayed about 8 years ago. The car has not even been rained on since then as it has been kept under a car cover, under a car port, since then. See pics.

Stage 1 - get the old girl going again
- New tail light lenses - old ones badly cracked
- New front lights - can't see further than about 5m at night
- New shocks
- Full engine service - new plugs, points etc etc
- Replace brake shoes, bleed brakes
(this should be done in a week or so)

Stage 2 - Make it handle and stop before I up the power
- Disks (all round)
- New rims & tyres
- Camber compensator
- Adjusters and a thicker front anti-roll (from a kombi) were fitted many years ago, so I should be OK up front

Stage 3 - The fun part
- Motor: rebuild & modify (to around 80-90kW) I want to use the car often, so will likely go for a bigger motor that gives me that grunt without needing to hammer the thing
- Gearbox: refit recon box, maybe with ratio's changed to suit the new motor

Use it daily to go surfing arroud the cape.

I'm Tim and owning a 1978 baywindow combi.
I drive it for 3 years now arround capetown(and 500km arround).
I am thinking about to total restorate it or buying a splitty.
The car is in great condition only some small rust parts start now.
I live beachfront in blouberg so that is not the best place for a combi bit a great place to drive it as my surf car

Hi guys/gals
I am looking for info on building a Baja bug with a Combi reduction suspension in the rear and a decent engine with a Weber Carb. I am also looking to purchase a project Bug to do the same to. Are parts easly available and would I be able to run 33" tyres with this setup? I am looking for decent ground clearance.
