Hi All

My name is Deon and I'm new to any kind of forum. I do like what I see though. While on holiday in Pretoria I spotted a kombi at a friends place. I was told that it hasn't been running for a few years. Anyway , I have been keen for a few years to start a project of my own and having had a few beetles as a teenager I thought it was a project that I could manage - being challenged on the mechanical front
After charging the battery and adding some fuel - she ( dubbed "Jellybean") started up in no time - a sign? I was sold. I had to wait 2 months to get the paperwork done after which she was transported to Cape Town by rail.
I'm stripping her down to bare bones and checking , replacing or fixing everything from the ground up - looking forward to some advice and ideas as I go along. She has a standard 1972 1600 twin port engine in good shape and almost no rust - needs a bit of cleaning and some paint. I'm still unsure about the model of the body though - if anyone can help. No visible manufacturing plates or number except (2) 44N A300 3242 ? See fotos under my project - to be loaded

Hi my name is willie and yeah looks like i am now a new 1975 silver "punch buggy" owner or rather my wife is . LOL goes to show how teenagers work . My eldest daughter wouldn't be seen dead in a conquest i wanted to buy my wife , so we looked around and found my wife's lil TORRETJIE i will post pics of her a bit later . Well we got the bug for 10k and i have to say the body has very little rust on it floorpan included .

ROFL but now after i have worked on it i came to the conclusion that the great herbie must have humped this lil beetle as i have no idea how the hell the guy actually drove it here !!

It had 4 diff sparkplugs of which non of them were beetle sparkplugs . Cylinder 2's intake valve didn't open , conrod 3 was installed upside down , cylinder 4 had a 2 mm grove in the sleeve possibly done by a gudgeon pin that went looking at other things to do . The lefthand side had a dual port intake and the right side a single intake . But yet the guy i bought it from drove it here !!! I would love to see any other car be able to do that and still drive !!

Well needless to say i ripped the engine out and replaced 4 X sleeves , 4 X pistons , 4 X rings , new bearings , 2 X dual port heads ( valves done ) . Replaced the gen with a alternator , replaced the starter . Replaced all four slave cylinders , new brake shoes , new master cylinder . Put adapter plates on and used my old mags i had lying around . Next headace this weekend i am going to replace the shifter rod's bush and trust me i have done a LOT of reading how to do it so hopefully won't be such a pain to do it .

Deon, post your VIN and I'll tell you when it was built (VIN is stamped on the bodywork immediately to the right of the rear engine valence on early bays, or on the upright part of the valence on later bays. You may have to do some scrubbing to find it.)

TimeMan, well done on your engine rebuild. Unfortunately that kind of bush mechanic butchery is all too common on ACVWs.

My name is sCre2n. Pay strict attention to what I say because I choose my words carefully and I never repeat myself. I've told you my name: that's the Who. The Where could most readily be described as a beetle Shangri-La. The What is easy: I recently bought a 1973 beetle or so they told, and set in motion the perfect plan in getting it a rear seat. That's also the When. As for the Why: beyond the obvious reasons of have my friend ride with, cause I think no beetle should be without rear seats. Which leaves us only with the How; and therein, as the Bard would tell us, lies the rub.

Hello, I am Scott. I have owned a 1970 and 1962 Type 1 VW Beetle. I am now planning my first beach buggy build (LWB lowered Lolette) based on a 1979 bug (very rusted). I am currently in London and will be attending the VolksWorld show next weekend with my shopping list!

We will be moving back to Durban at the end of the year when I hope to crack on with the build immediately.

Any advice? Any good VW contacts in Durban?
