Aircooled VW South Africa

My name's Brett and, no, I don't currently drive a VW. But my 84-year old mother does. Two, in fact.

She has my Dad's 1963 1200, that he bought new (it's a year old than me then) - in the mid 80s, after I seized the engine, it was resprayed and re-upholstered and stll goes like the clappers.

She also has a 1972 1600, which she's had since about 1978 - that's looking a little tatty as far as the inside goes and, in my opinion, it just doesn't measure up to 1200.

They're my transport whenever I visit Jo'burg and I guess they will be mine someday, though it's a day I prefer not to even think about. So part of my reason for being on this forum is to look after the cars from CT, and maybe stop her being ripped off blind (by my estimation, R15 000 on maintenance for the 2 over the past 2 years).

Hi, My name is Ernest and I am in many ways not a newbie. But then for this forum I am. As a pensioner I run a stock '74 1600 as a second car and most of the car is maintained by me. I just found that the area I live in forces me to seek outside help and this forum is just what I need. Keep up the good work.

Im in Durban and im new to the aircooled side of VWs,my old man Doug has owned and rebuilt buses for the pased 25-30 years most of them being baywindows with afew splits thrown in the mix.We have just about compleated the last rebuild being a 73-75 bay window bus,not sure of the exact year.The old mans going to use it for is local surf trips and the odd camping tripp to the dam.Im mostley into my golfs and im busy building a race inspired 82 mk1 2dr for abit of track day fun.I had such a good time building the bus with my old man that i aslo plan on building a bus as soon as im done with the track car.
We got a tonn of old pics of my dads previous buses and as soon as i get my hands on a scanner ill up load them and share.

Nice to know that I'm not the only one thats been bitten by the "bug"

I live in Cape Town and work in IT - the cars provide a great escape from reality - even more so when they are running .

Hi,I'm Jake and various members have berated me for not introducing myself, so apologies and here goes. I have had a few air cooled VWs over the years, a Karrman Ghia when I lived in Holland, a type 2 bus when I lived in India and another 2 busses when in capetown, both a Type 2 and a 3, and a Type 3 camper when in the UK. I was helping a friend refurbish his early bay Westfalia recently here in Joburg, and whilst getting parts for it saw a Jurgens Autovilla and was smitten. The quality of the interior is superb for the era, and they have a style all of their own! I am experienced in the restoration of vehicles ( I used to concentrate on Citroen DS's) and building out interiors, so campers and motorhomes are my main interest. Thanks.

Hi I am Richard and i was introduced to the site by JCB002 I currently do not own a AC but have gad many in the past and hope to have one again , my Father had a vw garage as did his father unfortunately i did not keep the tradition alive But VW and aircooled is very much in the blood I have healped out in the shop sibce i was 13 till 21 so I do have some experience on the basics . currently in IT like so many others here
