I would recomend buying an adaptorplate/flywheel combo from Gilo engineering. I went the D.I. Y route because of financial constraints and of course I did the adaptor for a 1400 into a beetle previously, so I knew what to look out for.

I think it's time to revive this thread again. Will start updating regularly as I am almost finished on my Beetle project. As I have taken the golf engine out of the bus to fit to the Beetle,I have a Toyota 2T that is going into the bus. The engine have got some mods done to it like a 3T crankshaft and TRD 300 degree cam. Bigger valves and double valve springs were fitted. Also porting and polishing was done.I will be running it with a 36DCD weber carb. This will give me around 150 hp. Enough power for a bus I think. Just waiting for the flywheel to come back from the engineering shop so I can start fabricating the adaptorplate.

I have done some surfing on the net. The guys get some insane power out of these engines. The Americans called it the little Hemi. That's because of the hemispherical combustion chamber design. There is a Red Corrola on you-tube with a 3T turbo that makes 742 horses. Now I want to put such an engine in a bus? Am I insane or what?
Ps: I only want to drive at 100 km/h comfortably!

At least the driver will still be aircooled! When he drives with both windows open. And the body is that of an aircooled. C'mon guys. Be realistic. Reliable aircooleds are not cheap anymore. At least its another bus on the road. I share the same passion as you guys for classic bugs and busses. Just with a little more grunt and reliability! :D :D

I hear you.

What ever it takes to keep the bus on the road, for a few more years.

Some one can always turn it back to original, if its there,

If its been scraped, its gone for ever.

But you must expect a bit of flack from your ACVW buddy's now and then.

I hear you with the need for some more power - lets face it a 1600 AC in a bus is... s...l...o...w... But why not settle for at least a VW watercooled engine, oh, lets say a 115HP 2E or ADY?

The only reason I am fitting the toyota engine is because I got it. Agreed, vw make good engines, but they don't make the best engines. I had the golf engine in the bus,but took it out to fit it into the Bug.

Ok so this is what so far. Fitted the passat rims that I bought from Beetlefanatic. Had to do some machining to get it to fit. Also needed longer studs and spacers. The hubcaps still don't fit, but I am working on that. This was done just to get the bus rolling out of storage. In the meantime I fabricated the adaptor plate for the 2T motor. Swopped the weber 36 DCD carb for a set of 40 DHLA Dellortos. As I had the intake for this, I fitted the carbs. Just to see how it looks. Went inside. When I got back to the garage what did I see? My son wiring it up to get it started! I must say this; the thing really revs up. So this week-end I am planning to fit the motor into the bus. Will see how far we get. Will take pics as I go along and post it! :D
