Re: New Members - Introduce yourself..
Hi there,
Ive just joined.. Name is Robin, stay in centurion. Dont currently own a VW but looking around for a kombi to start off with. Something cheap but a good runner that needs someone to take care of them. We have a 82 fleetline Caravan that is in almost new condition and the idea was to possibly one day tow it in an equally neat VW kombi.
After browsing the net in search of a kombi i stumbled upon this site. Been through a few posts and can see the passion you guys have! Would love to one day own a split window bus!
Cheers!

Re: New Members - Introduce yourself..
Hi ACVWSA Forum,
I am a newbe to your forum and I wanted to introduce myself. I will admit to making a rookie error and posting before saying hello - sorry about that, I'm a
I have a 1974 Type 2 Bay - a real bute - and his name is Les. My grandad (Les) bought the car new and drove it all his life. When he passed away, my Dad used the bus as a bus ferrying staff to and from work. When he sold the business he threatened to sell Les (the Combi) with it and I stepped in.
Les needed a lot of TLC and I have had him de-rusted and resprayed his original two-tone Yellow & White. I am currently rebuilding the engine (1800 twin port) because one of the heads is shot and I had no compression on 2 cylinders. He needed an engine rebuild anyway, my 'Ol Grandad would drive everywhere in second and stopped driving Les at 90 years young. When I am done rebuilding the engine I will concentrate on the interior and get the 'Ol boy back to prime condition.
I decided to join your forum (if you'll have me) so that I can meet new like minded enthusiasts and maybe swap a few spares along the way. I need some parts for my engine rebuild and I am also keen to join in some drives and events and thought this might be a good spot to hear about these type of things.
So, thanks again for letting me park off and I look forward to meeting and chatting to you all.
Ching ching,
Dave

Re: New Members - Introduce yourself..
Greetings, All
My name is Adrian Wahl, currently living in Ferndale, Randburg, and my wife recently bought herself a '72 Beetle. Seems to be mechanically ok-ish, but further inspection is having me believe that she bought me a head-ache!! She has always wanted a Bug, so, now she's got one. The Bug has been re-sprayed (not very well) in red, and after spending a bit of time cleaning the suspension, floorpan, and bottom of motor/transmission, in order to be able to see what's what, I have determined the following:
Bug has dual-channel braking systems, which is correct for '72 model - good, but only has one reservoir - bad
Comparing the front and rear wheel hubs to a Haynes manual that I managed to find, the front wheels are of a pre-66, while the rears are post-66. Hmmm. Had to bleed the brakes on day 1, since the system had emptied itself on the drive back from outside Pretoria, where we fetched it. Traced the leak to the left front wheel cylinder. Need to have the fronts done first, rears and master cylinder to follow, also looking at Disc system upgrade, but would prefer keeping it original. The wiring is a mess, and I'll have to re-do the lot. Found a few worrying oil leaks/seeps, and will need to fix them as I go along. While repairing the Starter Relay wiring, I had a look at the transaxle boots, and the left-side one has a major tear, which will need immediate attention, since, if I understand things correctly, the transmission oil splashes onto the transaxle, and the boot prevents it from escaping, which means the gearbox is probably alost running dry.
Yep, she needs lots of attention.
PS: The missus is very upset. She clipped the gate on the way out this morning, and dinged the left-rear wheel arch.(Another item to add to the list)
Anycase, looking forward to becoming a 'salted' Bugger, since you guys apparently have a very active, and pleasant social scene!!
Regards,

Re: New Members - Introduce yourself..
Hi to all who have been bitten by this Beetle Bug ! I acquired a 1973 1600 L a few years ago which had only ever had one registered owner. Needless to say the car looked in pretty good nick, (paid R3500), but in order to get it safely on the road, i.e. new link & king pins, brake overhaul, carb overhaul, tank overhaul, new tyres, electrical, new shocks, ........ the list goes on and on. Gave the car to my daughter to commute with, but unfortunately leaking push roads, leaking oil seals etc resulted in the 2.00 am dreaded call.... I'm stuck at the toll. Seized engine. So here I am trying to keep body and soul together as far as the Beetle is concerned, some R30,000 later. The Bug has truly bitten !!
