Hi to One and All
Pino is the name...... Yea yea heard all the variations and mispronunciations
Just discovered this site and still finding my way around. I know I'm a newbie here, but any help and or advice will be appreciated. My daughter, no in grade 12, is hinting high and low for a Beetle for her 18th birthday. As a concerned father her safety and wellbeing is my number one priority. My questions are: 1 What are the main items to look out for when buying/looking for a car? 2 Where can one look for vehicles in good condition or even restored ones; any reputable restored out there???
Looking forward to your opinions and advice
Regards

Re: New Members - Introduce yourself..
Good day to all. I have been watching this forum for quite some time now but only registered today. I own a 1969 VW Transporter. I had to replace the motor recently curtousy of my son in law. I bought a 1700 twinport used engine from a guy in Pretoria after it was proved to me in his buggy. A couple of months later and I still have not managed to sort the timing out. I am really looking forward to get the old bakkie going again. I would like to take this to a trusted person in the Kemptonpark area to try and resolve for me. Do you guys perhaps have any ideas?Tony Z wrote:I see we have had a few new members joing us lately...
How about introducing yourselves and saying hi???

Re: New Members - Introduce yourself..
Hello People: My name is Raffay, I am based in Pakistan; and more importantly I have recently brought home my first Beetle - it is a 1965 Sedan. Body seems to be fine mostly rust free - apart from some that is present in the front door where it connects at the lower end of the body (I don't know what it is called
). One major problem is that it is fitted with a 1970 door (driver side) I could not spot it while I was buying it
I will soon start a project and will then post pictures and will then sought your advice. As far as I am concerned, I am a graduate of LSE with a majors in Information Systems, worked as a consultant for 10 years in the IT field and now I am doing freelance project work from home. I am married with two children, daughter is 7 years old and my son is 1 year old. Apart from my latest passion i.e. to restore my first Beetle, I do photography, love Parrots and have also started taking computer science classes from Stanford (online
) Hope to have nice time here...

Maybe I should explain myself: Welcome to the ACVW forum, alway glad to see Type 3s on the forum. Now, you might wonder what a Type 3 is...
A Notch is a Type 3. So is a Fasty. And a Squareback. A Squareback is also a Variant. So is a Type 412 Variant, and even my Golf 4 Trendline is a Variant. A Variant is Volkswagen's model name for a stationwagon. Any VW stationwagon is a Variant. Your Notch however, isn't. Nor is the car you see in my avatar a Variant Karmann Ghia...
You could say my Audi stationwagon is a Variant, but you'd be wrong. It is an Avant. Audi uses Avant where VW uses Variant. Other car manufacturers have their own names for their stationwagon body designs, but I don't care about them...

Enjoy your car, don't let my little rant dampen your enthusiasm.

Re: New Members - Introduce yourself..
Could be, but maybe not... there's a difference between station wagons and SUV. Same like there's a difference between a fastback and a hatch, some look very similar. It's all described in articles about car design, names like ponton (notch), sedan (beetle), coupe etc are bantered about, but they are quite specific. I found learning about it very interesting. Google it.

Re: New Members - Introduce yourself..
Ok... So I have been recommended to intro myself... Just don't really know what to say.. but anycase lets go.
I have been a car fan ever since I was quite young.. think 5ish (that I can remember) and I was introduced to VW's when I was born (my folks had a beetle and Kombi (square ones after the shaggin wagons)
We used to travel back and forth in the Kombi and my sis and I used to sleep in the boot. Twas warm at night and we could lie down and see everything outside. The kombi was beige and white with brown interior and vinyl seats. My first experience in driving was in this! I must have been about 8 ( give or take a few years) and my sis, dad and I were driving in the Kruger on holiday. He asked if I wanted to "drive", which consisted of me sitting on his lap and steering while he operated the pedals (could not reach the pedals let alone the floor!). He told me that if I wanted to turn all I would have to do is turn the steering wheel "gently".
So we are happily "driving" along when we come to a corner, he says turn so I turn (gently), he says more... I give a little more effort, then he says with a bit more urgency turn harder.... I try but I am not that strong. Eventually at the last moment he yanks the steering wheel and we miss going through bushes and into a ditch but just!!! Needless to say I didn't drive for a long time after that!!
The beetle we had, well that was nice, was white with maroon "leather" aka Vinyl and was quick (1600 I think). My most memorable experience in this car was trying to get to a function (think it was a wedding) with my mother driving and sis in the front and me in the back. My mother was pushing it as we were really late and this thing was flying... I really had to hold on not to slide around. We got to a point where the robot was turning red and she floored it! She never realised that the road crossing was different levels, so this little volksie decided to vault into the air across the intersection (about 5-10m!!!) and land on the other side, in the meantime my sister is almost in tears and I have mutiple bruises on my head and arms... still can't belive how fast these things go.
The other intro to VW's was a passat station wagon of my best mates folks. It was also white, had a black interior and back in those days, cost a mere R20 to fill!!!
This was our favourite transport (my mate and I) to and from dinners and shops. We used to sit in the back and pull faces at the drivers behind us...
From then I was hooked... and decided to go on a VW (and audi) binge. I have had many old G1 2 doors, current golfs and avants, but I really crave the Karmanns, beetles and of course Splittys!!!!
I have a 54 (thats the best description I got from the previous owner) bus, It is a Barn door with windows all round. All that is missing are the "sun roof" windows on the side of the room. I eventually found this shell after searching for one in 8 years... that was worthy of being rescued!
I have had it in storage since as I would like to do it right and have great difficulties in finding the right parts, but I do know some of the original colour as it is preserved behind the orignal vinyl layers on the roof!
Hope I get to see more out there (seen only a handfull) on the roads that are near to OEM as possible.
Shot for the intro see you guys soon!

The most likely scenario, from your description, is that you have a Fleetline Kombi (OCT '74-MAR '76). Brazilian CKD, ZA assembly.Titanvw wrote:Ok... So I have been recommended to intro myself... Just don't really know what to say.. but anycase lets go.

The cargo doors on the left (default, RHD) are not the origin of the "barndoor" nomenclature.
