That trailer is a "Trek Bar" trailer, made locally in KIng Williamstown in the late 70's, under license from Westafalia Germany, and is closely modelled off their 'Essen' trailer.

It weighs only 80kgs, and can take a load of up to 400 kgs. Its really cool, and light enought to be pulled even by a beetle. Usually they always have a 5 or 6 rows of wood strips on top of the lid. When empty, they are also easily stored on its behind, by lifting the front end up completely, and letting it rest on the 2 metal bumpers next to the 'Jokon" tail lights. The tow bar coupling end would then be pointing skywards.

They should have 8 inch wheels and pneumatic tyres. Tyres can be bought from companies that sell hyster tyres, like Speddicks here in CT.

If anyone is interested, I have one set (Of 4) Atlas White Wall inserts, brand new, for sale. They will look cool on the trailer if you wanna match it up to your bus or beetle with white walls on them as well.

Thanks Muds that's correct. Mine came with brand new tires and road worthy.

I do need a complete spare wheel for it though and yes it's so light that you don't need a jack.

The original Westy trailer looks like this ->

I've had wanted posters up for over a year so I'm really chuffed to have picked this one up. :P

Good score Christian! :hangloose:

I found one of those a couple of years back. Very cool trailers! I'm looking for another one.

Thanks Fig. Your post on your score was what got me looking for one for myself. You carried yours home in the back of your SC which had me worried about towing mine 150Km + home. The fact that I could not see it at all behind the Rangy meant that I stopped every 30Ks to check that it was still there.

Yours seems to be in much better nick than mine was; I had to rebuild the entire axle (Thanks Jacques splitfan!!!) and the wheel beraings were rusty. I've fitted one of those little trailer flags to mine so I can see it out the back of a bus. We used it to carry our huge bedouin tent to AfrikaBurn and back this year and it was a real champ, despite the wear and tear from stone damage on the road through the Tankwa Karoo.

When looking for parts for my Essen trailer (like the ones here), I found Mike and his team at http://www.westytrailers.com/en very helpful.
There prices are reasonable and shipping super cheap to RSA.

Try them out...

No worries bud. Try to communicate with him soon... he regularly comes to Cape Town in December.

Maybe he would offer to bring some parts with him for you?
