Re: New Members - Introduce yourself..
Hi all, My name is Christo I own a 1974 Beamish buggy and we proudly belong to the Beach Buggy Club SA in Cape Town. We also have a 1974 Beetle that we have recently restored from head to toe. I have quite a number of friends that are members on this forum like DaveT, Ron & Gill. Its great to see so many VW heads on one site. Pity about the one or two ill mannered people that live in dream worlds to welcome one. A special thanks to those willing to give proper and decent advice.

I will upload a few of the beetle soon, if PinkFloyd don't mind. Took some last night quickly, Jaco likes to brag about his Beetle

Re: New Members - Introduce yourself..
Hi All
I live in the UK and imported a couple of vans from SA over two years ago (just like to point out that i did not import the vehicles into the UK for profit and have no intention of selling them). And i do have SA ancestry, my uncle lives in PE and my grandmother was from SA.Just in case any one freaks out because i realise that exporting vans from SA is frowned upon by you guys and i dont want to upset anyone.
One of the vans i have is a 64 panel van yellow and white (was built Turkis colour) think that this van came from Worcester near Capetown but i know that it spent a bit of time near the sea in Capetown as the roof gutters have a little rust on them the rest of the van is good but there is a plate on the drivers footwell. But the underside is generally good.I would be very interested to know are there a lot of these right hand drive CKD panel vans left in the world? And how much assembly was done in SA?.
The other vehicle that i have is a 1971 early bay Grawomobile this had a set of GP plates so this must have been from Jo burg?I would be very interested if anyone knows any of this vans early history,it is not a SA manufactured vehicle and was made in Germany( it has tourist export codes on the vin plate). Was it driven to SA? I would be really interested if anyone has any information on it, i believe that it was the only one made in RHD,it has a kilometer speedo so it must have been built with export to SA as a final destination in mind. This is my favourite van and i have rebuilt the steering, suspension and all the brakes including calipers and hoses and have a new reconditioned 1600 twin port ready to go in.
Look forward to hearing from any one with any info.
Regards Tim

Re: New Members - Introduce yourself..
Hi I recently purchased a 1972 VW kombi... It is a camper and has 88000 km on the clock, 4000 of that my own doing. I have taken her on several trips including one to Oppikoppi. She is in mint condition and as far as i can tell had one previous owner who appears to have been a bit of an explorer in his younger days as well as a mechanic. I on the other hand am ignorant in the ways of mechanics yet long for the open road and sites to be seen. I am still battling to figure this site out... but thought i would give everyone a heads up, being 20, a student and an avid traveller i tend to have to use every penny to keep her happy and running.

Re: New Members - Introduce yourself..
I had a look at the bus almost 4 years ago close to Cape Town. It was owned by Eugene on this forum. I decided to get a Westy in stead. I would suggest you either ask him or ask Fig. He is also familiar with the history of this bus.

Re: New Members - Introduce yourself..
Thanks,Yes i bought the bus from Eugene, he had it advertised on Gumtree Cape Town, how would i contact him or Fig?i am not up to speed with this site and my computer skills are not fantastic, the interior layout on this bus is a bit strange,i can understand why you went for a Westy the layout is more usable, what year is your Westy?Right hand drive Westies are like rocking horse manure over here in the UK,especially early bays.didi wrote:I had a look at the bus almost 4 years ago close to Cape Town. Re: New Members - Introduce yourself..
Hi Tim, I suggest contacting them by PM (private message) there is a message tab on the top of the screen after you logged on. Search for there names on there and type a message.
The Grawomobil stems from the Arcomobil. The name changed in 1971 when son-in-law Gerhard Grau took over the running of the business. If memory serves me correctly your RHD bus was a special order and is one of a kind.
I own a'70 and a '72 RHD westy (didn't intend to own two, but that's a long story)

Re: New Members - Introduce yourself..
Greetings AirHeads!
My name is Rob and I live in Somerset West. I have had a lifelong love for SplitScreens. I owned a 1963 15 Window Bus in 1980 as a first car whilst growing up in CA. It was a bit of a wreck as it grew up by the beach and was full of rust. I guess it would be done up these days. The "Vessel" had Baja rims/exhaust and was a 1300cc with reduction gears. Too many stories of life in CA went with it when eventually sold to finance my trip to Europe and a return to the UK where I was born. Moved to SA 12 years ago and have 3 kids and a wife.
Am planning on getting a Single Cab Splittie.... am keen on hearing people's thoughts about the Fleetline v Original Splitie!

Re: New Members - Introduce yourself..
Thanks.I think i managed to send a PM to Eugene,so will wait to hear back. Thanks for the info, but think its strange to go to the trouble of ordering a RHD Grawo when you could just pop down to your local VW dealer and order a new RHD Westfalia back in 71.How many westfalias are left in SA now?Probably best if the remaining ones stay in SA, i think i would feel a little guilty i brought another back to the UK,but i must admit its tempting,my wife likes the interior layout and the roof on the westfalia early bays and there must have been a few leave SA recently as i have seen a few advertised here in the UK still on SA (GP) plates, maybe the SA government should ban exports of these vans, i visited Sri Lanka a few months ago and there is a total ban on the export of vehicles that are over 50 years old there.didi wrote:Hi Tim, I suggest contacting them by PM (private message) there is a message tab on the top of the screen after you logged on. Re: New Members - Introduce yourself..
Hi Team, just checking in to say hi. Never owned an ACVW, lots else but never AC. Got couple of mates with large and extended tastes and let's just say they have been slowly convincing me to enter the realm of the rattle cans. Bought, borrowed and busy reading just about every book I could scrounge. Now busy looking for a car, kind of cannot decide between a beetle or a split......my preference is towards the older cars (bit like me, in all honesty). Lots of rust out there, not sure I am up for a hard-core restoration at this stage. But I did find a really good condition Stirling rack in a flowerbed this afternoon when I went to inspect another beetle......so if this counts, I made my first ACVW purchase today!
Adolf and Ferdinand are alive and well, brainstorming in Vegas.......Elvis is serving drinks.
