Hi All,
I am from Benoni, on the East-side of Johannesburg
FYI to the people on the Mountain's side.
I've started a small hobby based operation called Volkswerke which is now picking up to level that i'm might quit my Day-job soon
Looking forward to meets , making new like-minded friends on the forum. I am still a member of the VW Club SA. And new to the Air-cooled & Bug worlds.
Recent client projects included a Major tuning 7 Fixing up a '74 Beetle , a Full restoration on a '69 Beetle and a new project landed ..
A hippie themed party Bus with an Open budget... No Bus yet
Any input, advice would be appreciated in the days to come.

Thanks been a big learning experience for me since it is the first car I've had to work on myself. Usually just sat and whatced my dad (Ck1 on the forum)

I live in Richards Bay and am a VW fan of long standing, my first VW being a 1983 Golf GTi. Since then I have owned Golf's, Golf Bakkies (not the Caddy, but the older 1800 Sport models) as well as Jetta's.
Currently I have a 2.3i Microbus, a Syncro and my faithful old Beach Buggy. She is powered by a stock standard 1300 air-cooled Beetle engine and has given me many years of great service. Unfortunately she spent the last 12 months parked off in my Dad's garage on the Southcoast with the result that she now needs some TLC.
I went down last weekend to fetch her and now I am busy now restoring her to her former glory. So far I've done all the tie rod ends and ball joints, new shocks, the tank has been sent in to be cleaned out and resealed and I have had the rims sandblasted to get rid of some serious rust that crept in. I got the rims back today and sprayed them with edge primer to keep the rust at bay. They look really great and I think they will be OK for another few years once I've sprayed them white again.
New plugs, fuel filter and some work on the brakes completes most of the picture. I am also taking out the bucket seats (my backside doesn't fit so nicely anymore) and fitting the Syncro's old front seats.
One thing I have a problem finding is a new gearbox mounting. The one in there has been kaput for a long time, but everywhere I go, nobody has it. If someone on this forum can help me, that would be great.
That is me for now, I will report back once the buggy is done.

Ive always been a vw fan, dad owned a mk1 gts when i was a wipper snapper and i was the proud owner of a citi golf myself till my sister wrapped it around a tree( story for another day). I bought myself a baja bug and am busy doing work on it.
Motor is a 1600 TP roughly 70's model motor, body has had the sad treatment of some dodgy work but ill leave the looks for last.
Have re done all wheel cylinders, master cylinder, front bearings, motors been re done too and just have to fit the 4 into 1 exhaust system and set the timing, change oil, plugs etc and then shes ready to roll!

Hi I am expecting some flack - but wth, here goes...
I am English, living in England, currently have a '68 Dormobile camper and am looking to buy a ZA VW Splitscreen, go on holiday in it touring ZA next summer with the family, and bring it home with me afterwards.
I had no no idea there was this animosity to exporting buses to UK, so accept I may get some grief from you guys - this just seemed a good place to start....
I have two problems with UK Splitscreens, apart from the obvious cost, (if my bus was one year older it would have cost double), but mainly it is pretty much impossible to
find a stock one - over the years they've be lowered, non-standard engines fitted, massively re-welded/repaired, resprayed etc etc.
So when you compare the price of a ZA bus to the cost of UK bus, take into account the UK bus has probably several thousand pounds of lowered beam installed, disc break conversions and much welding done etc etc.

slow-lane matt, don't worry, most of the animosity is towards commercial exporters who buy buses for a pittance and then sell them to UK dealers at a hige mark-up. Most of us won't be happy if you take a SA split back to the UK, but I don't think most people will resent you for it, especially as you are obviously an enthusiast. You may even find one or two volks willing to support your plan.

I appreciate 100% original 50 year bus is unrealistic, I am looking for one that has inevitably had work done over the years, but which has tried to stay as original as possible, certainly on the outside. I think the buses below are beauts.
