Re: New Members - Introduce yourself..
Hi there!
I bought my first Beetle in 1970 - a 1968 1500. After that a brand new Fun Bug in 1974 and then three beach buggies over the years.
My brother and I are currently working on a 1977 curved windscreen 1600 - so although new to the forum, I've always been a Volksie fan!

Re: New Members - Introduce yourself..
Hi there
My name is Christina, I live in PE. I've had Beetles since 1993 when I got my '72... Since then I've had several bugs, a '66, a '65 and a '74. I've also had a '63 split screen van. My friends all had Beetles and old kombis and notch-backs (type 3). Mom had a '79 1100 Golf that she taught me to dice on
I was very active in the local (PE) VW scene in the early and mid 90's, and was one of the judges at the annual Beetle Show in Uitenhage for three years running.
My current bug is my '57 Oval that I've had since 1995 - and recently got it out of storage where it had languished for the last 14 years... after thieves broke in and started stripping it... Speaking of which, I'm looking for a few bits and bobs to get her back to where she belongs...

Re: New Members - Introduce yourself..
G'day Dubbers!
I joined this forum some time back but have not been very active until recently. I own a 1962 bus that I bought in Jhb about five years ago off an internet ad. I had a friend check it out for me and bought it unseen. I'd been looking for a Splittie for a couple of years (and was almost scammed by one for sale in Ireland at a 'too good to be true' price!) so was really excited to finally get my hands on one. My wife and I drove the bus (since named Poppy) down to Cape Town, taking ten days. We had no interior (we sat on a folded up bit of foam from the edge of a trampoline) no registration, no lights, at one point no brakes, but we made it, had a fantastic time, and got engaged on the way.
Since then I've built an interior for the bus (bench seat up front, rock 'n roll in the back, with a removable forwards or backwards facing 2-seater) and done a rewire. I also fitted a dual circuit brake system, and recently upgraded to discs up front. (Total brake failure gives you a new perspective on the importance of stopping ability!) I also serviced the king and link pins and steering box so it sort of goes where you point it now, and have done some cosmetic work. I've currently got the engine out to restore the tank, and hope to fit IRS one day.
My bus isn't perfectly original, and there's plenty 'wrong' with it, but I wanted a bus to take away for weekends and enjoy. Hopefully one day it'll be reliable enough to do this!
My previous experience with old cars is limited to rebuilding my 1965 Land Rover, and my first car was a danger-yellow 20 year old Golf GLS. Thanks in advance for all the help I'll be asking for in the future!
Mike

Re: New Members - Introduce yourself..
Hi, Joined this forum some time ago but posted for the first time yesterday. Got promptly directed to introductions before "you barge" in. Well thanks for the redirection, I neglected it back then.
I am Ryan Dennis. My wife bought my 5th bug after a while being bugless. Originally form Cape Town but now from South Africa (CT-JHB-KBY-CT-Hotazel-JHB). Left the 1962 bug in Cape Town to be sprayed. Fetched it last year and a number of parts were missing... settled back in Germiston and now need to get this project going.
I want to get Betsy (the bug) as original as possible. Think that the engine will be the only non-original item on it as I have my doubts wrt to the performance of the current one. Brakes have been redone - including the brake pipe from master to back brakes.
Pictures next week...

Hi Jolas, it's read and cream, but I don't think it's an ex ambulance. I got a 'birth certificate' from VW in Germany but it made no mention of ambulance spec. It's a 13 window now and I think it always has been. Why do you ask?

Re: New Members - Introduce yourself..
OK thanks man - was just a long shot. A red and white splittie passed Sean and I a few weeks ago. N1/R44 Klapmuts, heading towards Stellenbosch. It looked like it was on a long roadtrip, NAM plates and all. It looked like an ambulance, the Rear hatch was definetly that of an ambo. We could,nt get any pics as it drove passed ...Poppy62 wrote:Hi Jolas, it's read and cream, but I don't think it's an ex ambulance.
