If that's all that's wrong with it, take it! Dog legs and nose would be easy to repair.

I am going to check out a blue 1972 westy that been chopped in the front for a radiator and there is a chevy engine in the back. I think buying this and just "swapping" would save me money on repairing the crash damage and the rust that is already there.

I would like to propose this idea to insurance but I don't see them accepting it. Does anyone have any idea's how I could get the money out of them to buy this bus?

Well today insurance finally had a look at my bus and already I had a phone call about sourcing a rear valence Depending on what their quote comes up to I might ask them to just give me a cash amount instead & just look for another body. I am gonna be in JHB in 3 weeks time so if any of you guys have any potential bodies there that I could have a look at please don't be shy! I will probably go have a look at that one in westdene.

And the best part is that they don't even want to pay that full amount, but rather R4000 because I want to keep the car

That is pretty much the attitude that one would expect from insurance companies, unless one had an "agreed-value insurance policy", whereby a valuation of the vehicle is undertaken and certified by a recognised valuer (we have some, within the British, Volkswagen Type 2 Owners' Club), prior to the policy being taken out or renewed. Some insurance companies, would probably have offered you less than half of that.

I would certainly contest their offer, but you will need to show convincing evidence of significantly greater value, based upon recent documented sale prices (not asking prices), of similar vehicles, in similar condition, within South Africa.

If you retain the vehicle, then you are withholding its scrap value, which they could recover by selling it to a vehicle dismantler; hence the reduced offer.

Nigel I agree.. I have guaranteed insurance on the Bus....originally the quote for Mo was R360 per month for normal insurance and when I asked what the payout would be they said max R40k and I know they would have actually offered R20k max. I then took a guaranteed value of R120k and the premium is R510 per month.....in my view, well worth the extra for piece of mind!

I got my insurance to insure my bus for 25k when I got it. Tomorrow they are going to tell OUTsurance that it was valued at that amount and insured for that amount. I have also collected lots of bus ads and I also have every cash slip I ever spent on the bus. My wheels and exhaust alone are like 5k lol

Yes it needed to be inspected and have a tracker added. They didn't need to value it but I had to go to an inspector that they said to prove it existed. Then we agreed a price and then they calculate the premium on that!
