No real news other than she is going back to Tony to have a new clutch fitted, the thrust bearing whines every time I depress the clutch. Other than that she runs very well, starts up after a few swings and idles pretty well...

We cleaned the garage it is in...

Her clutch will be sorted this coming week and hopefully a little oil leak...

Thanks Herman Slowly getting there...

So, good and bad news...

Good News - Clutch has been sorted with a new clutch plate, pressure plate, skimmed flywheel, clutch release bearing, clutch fork, flywheel oil seal, etc. It is about a brazillion times better than before and looking at the old clutch parts you can see why. I'll get some pictures up later but the pressure plate was rusted and most likely seized, the release bearing used to be a bearing but now resembles a small grinder, the clutch fork is bent, oil seals are fooked while the clutch itself wasn't too bad. Lesson learnt, on an old car such as this that has stood for quite some time, just replace the clutch as its a relatively simple and inexpensive job...

Bad News - She is leaking oil, from a number of places and the best will be to give her a bottom end and head rebuild in the future. Its not too bad that I have to leave oven baking tins beneath her but is a concern that I would like to address when I get the money. I know these engines leak a bit and will use more oil than a newer motor but I don't want to risk anything and would prefer her running as close to 100% as possible...

AFAIK all the bits have been replaced and the old girl is up and running again already

As MarshallGTi has said, the following has been replaced...

Clutch fork
Clutch plate
Pressure plate
Clutch release bearing
Flywheel skimmed
Flywheel o-ring
Spigot shaft oil seal

as well as two engine mountings. Picked her up on Saturday and she is driving a lot better now! Next up is to give her engine a good clean and degrease and see where she is leaking oil from...

I must be one lucky sonofabitch...

Took the Variant for a quick drive yesterday afternoon and noticed she was struggling to idle and low on fuel. Popped in to a local Sasol and put R100 in and made my way back home. There was a bit of a fuel smell in the car but I thought nothing of it, old VW's have all sorts of funny smells. Got home and reversed in to my parking bay, got out the Variant and noticed what looked like water on the floor that appeared to come from the Variant...

Well, obviously it couldn't be water so I touched it with my finger and smelt it and realised it was fuel, fcuk! Got a small LED torch out and started crawling under the front of the car to check for leaks but found nothing. Went round the back and found a pool of fuel on the passenger side of the car so I opened her up and opened the engine bay cover. The main fuel line looked fine and I couldn't see any leaks so I started looking around the passenger side carb...

The man fuel line to the carb was loose and I am pretty sure is the cause of the fuel leak. Having heard and seen pictures of horror stories of aircooled VW's setting themselves alight, I grabbed my fire extinguisher that I keep in the Variant, got as much out the car as possible and waited for at least 20 minutes. Luckily nothing came of it but it gave me a fright anyway, we had already removed the fuel filter from the engine bay and relocated it on top of the gearbox, a huge no no! It looks like I am going to need to review the fuel lines from the pump to the carburettors to make sure this doesn't happen again...
