Thanks for the advice Herman.
I tried to retap the threads as suggested, but it was too damaged. The plug just turned freely without reshaping the old threads.
A local engineering shop fitted a timesert and all is good to go.
Cheers

Re: My DIY farm buggy
Update: The buggy is doing well so far - I am impressed with its rock climbing capabilities. Struggles a bit in turf mud, but that is mainly due to the tyres. Fuel consumption is a bit higher than expected - about 7-8km/l - but that is also due to the tyres and the fact that most of the driving is done in 1st and 2nd gear.
Here it is standing tall between two farm legends:

The filter kept on clogging up with dust. Made an impromptu snorkel which works really well.

The only issue thus far was that the alternator at some point stopped charging the battery. I was driving on the farm routes and stopped about 3/4 of the way to a cattle post. It wouldn't start back up - never looked at the idiot light. With no cell reception, I vented a bit...

Very nicely done. I am sure your father in law will have hours of fun in this. You gave me a good idea for a game view vehicle
