Hi Volks,

My name is Wayne & i Have been out of the Bug scene for some 15 years now. I used to own a VW workshop back in the days specialising on beetles doing customsing & imports of custom parts but later persued other prospects. My son is now 17 & has being bitten by the Bug. He has a 1972 1600 which was left to him by my late mom. So far we have done mags, sound system & lowered the front suspension. There are other things planned but been a student his buget is tight.

Below are a few photos but please excuse the quality, this was before digital & cellphone cameras.

Friends Baja Bug, was a 68 import, the one with ball joint front suspension & disk breaks. It had a 1600 with 36 Dellortos, 009 lightened flywheel & power pully.
The completed project took a 3rd place in its class at one of the Bug Jams.

My toy nicknamed "Etter". She was not pretty but man did she haul ass. She wasn't built for speed but rather for dunes. She had a 1835 motor, 009, power pully, flame thrower exhaust, lightend flywheel & 40mm Kadrons which where later swopped out for 36 Webers, all this on a 1300 gearbox. Used to pull wheelies down the tar road & put many a 4x4 to shame in Atlantis.

Friends 1962 beetle. Rebuilt it from the bottom up. Lowered front suspension, one piece windows, custom "VOLKSWAGEN" grill & sanblasted logo on back window. Had a 1600 with 009 & SP carbs.

Howzit Gents

My name is Cedric, the very first car I owned (and I bought and paid for it myself) was a powder blue 1971 1600 VW Beetle named Killer. I was the second owner and bought it from a very nice old lady who couldn't drive anymore, as you can imagine it had some scrapes and dings (old lady driver) but was in a very good condition overall. that was about 24 years back and we lived in different times then I gave her R1000 (total price was R2500) and primmest to pay another R500 every month until it was paid for, we shook hands and I started to say my goodbyes when she said "where are you going are you not taking the car" and I replied that no I was gone take it as soon as I've paid my last installment to which she said "No No take it now I want to clean the garage". needles to say it was my pride and joy and I drove it until I got married.

For the next 5 years or so I bought another few as cheap project Beetles and one Type 3 Notchback and restored them to be sold again for a profit but never kept one for myself.

It is now 18 years later and to get back to the reason for joining this forum I have 3 boys the older 2 Cedric Jnr (22) and Francois (20) are now looking for cars, they tried for a long time to convince me to buy them cars BUT I kept to my guns and made it clear from day one that if they want cars they should get jobs and buy them for them selves. but to show them I care (or because it was my first car) I have tried my best to convince them to look at some VW Beetles or Variants, what beter way to buy a car that you restore yourself and in so doing learn the ins and outs of how they work (but in truth I'm just hopping they will ask me to help them, it will be great to do something with them and maybe this will be my last opportunity to teach them something).

Thanks for the welcome Tony

Unfortunately in those days cell phones with cameras were none existing and digital cameras were expensive, so no pictures unfortunately.

Hallo fellow members,

My name is Kiewiet and I recently bought my 2nd Beettle. My first Beetle was also my first car 22 odd years ago and regretted selling it back in the day. So recently an opportunity arose where I was offered an original 1973 1300cc Bug as the owner passed away. Naturally I grabbed the opportunity and bought it. I vowed to do to it what I never could do to my first Beetle. With that said it is definately not my intention to butcher it but to rather restore it with a modern twist added. At the moment it is at the spray painters for a complete respray and to replace the damaged bumpers and side steps. I should get it back by month end and then I will upload some pic's. I also plan on using it as my wedding vehicle because it will mark another memorable memory with a Beetle. I stay in Pretoria and hope to join in on the AH fun.

Morning all

Just a short introduction

I've been a huge VW Beetle fan for many years but as I'm in a wheelchair I've always had a storage problem.

Until a couple of months ago, when I came across a photo of a VW Beetle Van (photo below)

I'm currently in the process of sourcing a VW Beetle and a VW Bay window rear (both need to have a really cheap price tag) for this build

Hopefully I will be able to get the same build as this guy did

I'm from the UK, just north of London.....I'm a retired graphic designer, retired sadly due to ill health having slipped two discs , one of which cut the nerves in my spine....I'm nOw 24/7 in pain having to take morphine to be able to function....my background car wise is in hot rodding and custom cars which was sadly curtailed by the back injury and reluctantly forced me to sell my '60 Chevy Belair ....the beetle thing came about after we bought our son a '72 1300 for passing his driving test which he promptly broke....the current beetle is a '75 SA jeans bug we bought from the guy who bought it while living in SA and then when moving back to Wales brought it back with him...we have only recently started working on it as my son had been living in New Zealand and my back problems limits me from doing much without screwing myself up for a few weeks...it's slowly getting there now....my main involvement in cars nowadays is that I'm a Hot Rod artist and sell art all over the world....

Yikes Tim... not envious at all.
I am sure there are a few of us here with back problems which we wouldnt wish upon anyone else, but yours sounds pretty severe.
How about some pics of your art?
Welcome to the forum... hope you enjoy your stay - we are not as bad as the VZi claims... ;-)
