Aircooled VW South Africa

Welcome David. The Overberg is one of my favourite areas to visit. I have fond memories of driving those gravel roads in my first Beetle in the early 2000s.

Im Emmanuel from Durban having a 1974 baywidow kombi with some rust ,it is a 2000l aircooled twincarbed motor which i was thinking of selling and convert to 1.8 golf engine got engine and adapter plate.any one who having a good body or panels to fix rust areas can help

Herman!! You're supposed to encourage him to keep the aircooled motor in the kombi!!

He sounds to be determined to make it a low sled, so best save the engine.

hi all
i am siraaj....i bought a 1600 beetle that was converted to a buggy abt 20 yrs ago,to go fishing and if i must add up the total amount of times that i actually drove the car...6 months total....yes 6 months.i was always petrified to take the car on the rd as i got stuck all the time. its an awesome car to have when its running. i finally decided to fix up my buggy for fishing and guess what..lol
i would like to get into my bug and drive without the fear of getting stuck.

so the 'bug' has bitten again had a 73 as my first set of wheels - back in 82 - paid a princely sum of R 750 for her , many happy memories including some in a free brown uniform - as issued back in the day

and now I have the urge again hehhehe

looking forward to getting back in an aircooled

Hi Guys. New kid on the block.

Got a 1600S that will be getting the full treatment.
Also want to include some "nice to haves".
Will be doing a Fuel Injected plate, under the carb and electronic ignition. But hidden. When you open that engine cover, it must look stock.
Bought some beadings, including that little piece of trim that is added on the side.

So yes, I will come and ask and beg for advise as soon as we start in earnest.

Hi All from North Scotland
My family emigrated to SA in 1974 when my step father accepted a supervisor role at VWSA in Uitenhage. I started as an apprentice at the apprentice training school, passed my trade test (way up near Pretoria somewhere) and thereafter worked in the Toolroom till 1979 when we returned to the UK.

One of the great things of being a VWSA apprentice is we could lease cars VERY cheap, I always had beetles and I could go down to the assembly line when my new build was coming through and make sure it was 'fully loaded' with everything extra that could be had

Be really interested to hear from any VWSA apprentice (Toolmakers, Turners etc) from that era (1974-1978 ish)

Have lots of very fond memories of working at VWSA, had a lot of fun and us apprentices got up to lots of stuff we were not supposed to be doing..... but serving that apprenticeship set me up for life so I did learn a lot!!
