Tony Z wrote:I fitted the new carb linkage yesterday. Amazes me that a linkage kit made by the same company that makes the manifolds and for a generic carb, still doesnt fit. Hex bar was too long, one linkage arm didnt clear the weber throttle arm and the other arm doesnt clear the carb... some supplied bolts didnt match the threads they were supposed to fit into. And after final assembly, I have 7 nyloc nuts left over. 7??? If it was 8, I would say its for the filer bases which I used my original nuts for..... anyway, its on now, just the air filters to go.
Just pray that you didin't drop any down the carb.

Much work done on the 69 SC on Friday & Saturday.
The motor & engine compartment got a good wash, new engine bay seals in, removed the stock oil bath filter & fitted a washable type as the oil bath was making a mess, this bus is not going to see dusty roads so the mod will be fine.
The rear bumper was hammered back to a shape (well almost) but it will not clear the pee shooters, for another day. New front indicators & headlights fitted. But can't get the high beam to work, the steering stalk needs replacement, got one out of my stash of parts, but for another day. Got the indicators working as well. I didin't get a chance to fit the new tail lights, maybe this weekend.
Empi 5's fitted, bus looking soooo much better with the new shoes :P
Changed the tranny oil, setup the carb, put in a smaller idle jet the .060 that was in there was too big, the main was also changed to a 122,5 the unknown jet in there was way to small which lead to some overheating issues and crap running.
All the wiring in the engine compartment redone & tidied up, now running an alternator, for peace of mind.
Only got finished around 11 PM Saturday evening, test run was to CITP on Sunday morning, had my fingers crossed all the way there & back.
Ran like a dream, the extra cooling ie: larger fan & dog house shroud & oil cooler and engine compartment seals & jet change has made a huge diff. I can now touch the dipstick after a long run, previously I could smell the overheating engine.
And the big bonus, not a drop of oil leaking, the work carried out to sort the oil leaks paid off.
It can cruise at about 110-120 on the flats but the uphills are an issue, but I already dug out a good stash of parts, and have everything I need to get a nice 1776 together with a Scat C35 cam, big valve heads and a nice set of twin carbs, deep sump, etc. watch this space, then I will be able to get over the hills @ 110
More work to come but I will enjoy it as it is for now.

Aaaah yes, I did the same thing that I do every day - remove rust, sand down yesterday's filler, dust it off and apply another thin layer. At least it's starting to take shape now and vaguely resembles the front of a Kombi again :)

gave it a proper valet (ok i didn't but i watched). noticed some small bubbles on the passenger side door hinge. not sure if this is due to a crap paint prep job or the signs of rust.

will be going to my local workshop and asking if i could rent their lift for a few hours as i want to por15 the underside of the car and don't fancy doing it under car stands.

Adjusted the clutch on the Ghia and then tried to see why she bounces uo and down when travelling between 10 and 20 mph. (Anybody got any clues to this?)

Test started the busses motor and then cleaned out the garage.

Bugandy - No. I jacked the car up and measured the space between tyre and road, while rotaring the wheel. They are all round.

took the bug for a 30km drive today.

ears hurt now and I am 90% sure the bug is only running on 3 cylinders.
That 30km drive took me nearly 2 hours thanks to the traffic.

And my battery is dead, so had to push the car. I do have a spare which I will put in tomorrow. If I dont get the car running on 4 cylinders tomorrow, I'll go to the CPT run in my waterpumper

Fitted another filter between the carb and pump and it looks like that solved the dirty fuel bowl problem at least temporarily. Hopefully I can take her for a drive on the weekend.

Fitted the new regulator yesterday evening and while running the engine tonight, measured the volts. 14.2V. :hangloose: I then removed the battery + terminal to confirm that the alternator is working fine. Thanks Rui!
Everything is fine with the charging circuit, except that it looks like the battery has lost a cell from the long standing in storage. :(

Fixed the wiring to get the fuel gauge to work. Tried the original 6V gauge and a 12V one. Both seem to work fine, except that the 6V shows slightly more than the 12V one. I expected the difference to be a lot bigger.

Yes, I know, I have to fill up soon.

Ran some piping for the electric fuel pump, now I need to get a fuel filter with an 8mm inlet and 6mm outlet. Hopefully can get that tomorrow and the fuel system is sorted. Busy cleaning out the carbs again, did a bit of a rush job previously, now i'm cleaning them again. Need to address one or two oil leaks on the engine, fit the 009 when I get it on Saturday and we be having a running fasty :)
