Hi, new to this forum, not so new to trying to build my toy.

Here's what I have. I am only mocking up at this stage before a complete body off re-build.

1964 beetle (type1)
Stripped out.

Interior:
Rollcage
Two SQP reclining buckets.
Autometer Ultra lite Oil pressure guage and sender
Autometer Ultra lite Oil Temperature guage and sender
Autometer 5" Tachometer

Chassis:
All round disk brakes from Volkspares,
Rear camber compensator,
Front EMPI anti roll bar
Porsche Fuchs 15" Alloys shod with Michellin exalto

Gearbox:
Custom built by Volkspares with welded and keyed gears as well as superdiff

Engine:
Autolinea Bubble case
CB performance roundport heads
94mm P&C's from Mahle
82mm EMPI chromoly CW crankshaft
EMPI H-Beam rods with ARP2000 bolts
Engle W130 Camshaft
EMPI high perf followers
EMPI HPMX44 Carbs
Extremely light 3.5KG flywheel
All associated tinware and alternator.
72Plate external cooler with fan
All balanced and triple checked

Ignition:
I am going with GOTECH miniX

It has taken me two years to get the parts together and now I will start building in an ernest fashion. However I hope I can draw from your experience and find some helpful hints and tips. I am also sure that I have left some items from the list above. I will take pics as I go along.

Thanks, it's nerve wrecking to tell the truth. I just won't know whether it will be fast before it's done.

I have gone through many posts on different forums and damn it's confusing. That is the reason I went for the CB heads after having purchased EMPI units originally, more airflow. It never seems enough and my dad had to bring me back to reality by asking me what I want from the car. I want fast and reliable, thus decided on more moderate cam with 1.1 rockers that equals less ramp but more importantly less valvetrain wear, roundports as opposed to wedgeports so I don't need to murder the engine to make power and most importantly a realistic expectation of around 140HP - 160HP, maybe that is still optimistic? I don't know.

Not too optimistic, my Ghia's motor is very similar and makes 104kW at 5000rpm.

Well, next week I will start getting the body off the chassis, taking potos as I go along. I have a question though. Where can I find 2" wider rear fenders? the offset on the Porsche wheels is a slight problem and I wwant to get a stock looking fender to go over them. I have seen companies in the states on the web who make them. Is there someone in S.A?

I would bet Barry could make them for you, or widen existing ones.

I could do it but it has to be done on the bug after it has been lowerd to the stance you want it and then the fenders get built around the wheels

And be warned it AInt Cheap Lead is seriously expencive now a days

Just trail checkking to make the 60`s fenders fit on the 70`s body for the loder look

Volkspares sells fiberglass fenders that has been widened... maybe that will be cheaper?

Umm, I don't really keep tabs(Trust me on this, YOU DON'T WANT TO). I would guess around R65k has gone into the engine parts wise. I am building it from the ground up so have to buy absolutely every single part that goes into an engine compartment. Also The engine hasn't been fully assembled yet and I already have over 60Hr's of labour going into measuring and mocking up. I am beginning to understand why people would charge R100+k for an engine.

Damn, wanted to assemble the engine this weekend. Unfortunately the CB roundports were not machined well, with one exhaust port looking almost stock and being 2mm smaller in diameter than the others. Phoned Garren at Volkspares and he will exchange, but here I started thinking wedgeport as opposed to roundport. So now this engine will be a real NA monster
