Someone in CT claims to have one of the 5 roof of africa rally SP beetles but is not answering kevin with regards to the tech specs that would make it a "roof" car.

'The Roof of Africa' is a rally usually presented in winter time in Lesotho. Since Lesotho is an 'island' inside the South African borders, (like just another province albeit a completely independent country), it will mean that the vehicles will never South African ground. I was at the start of the 2005 Roof in Maseru, but nowadays it is only off-road motorcycles and quads participating in it. Some pics from the 'Roof' in 1970, when it was won by a Lolette buggy:

The byline next to the pic below was

'The Prime Minister of Lesotho studies the works end of the winning Lolette Dune Buggy. With him are the crew, Pearce and Ferguson. On the extreme right is the Chief Traffic Officer of Lesotho.'

Beach buggies did well back in the day. Apart from the original Manx winning the Baja in Mexico and the Lolette at the Roof, in 1979 Petra Marais and Mervyn Woods won the 1000km desert race in a Kartkraft!

Klaus Degener who had a bakery in Lesotho ran a very fast Beetle. Had power steering as well.
