Aircooled VW South Africa

Hi guys

Please assist in ID'ing these wheels?

They are marked VW / AUDI, have a short serial number, look like a matched set, at least the 4 off white ones. The 5th wheel in OG silver has the same markings.

The set of 4 are 5 x 205 PCD, measure 14" x 5J
The 5th silver wheel is also 5 x 205, measure 14" x 5,5 J

They look similar to bus crows feet wheels, although the crows feet cut out or step, is much thinner and less pronounced. Definitely does not look like any Beetle wheels i've seen before.

Any help would be appreciated.

Those are early (68-70) baywindow bus wheels. They might also come from a Fleetline. 14in wheels were introduced on buses in 1964, but SA split buses all had 15in wheels; the 14in wheels first arrived on the baywindows.

I'm not sure about the 5.5in wide wheel. Is it slightly more deeply dished than the others (ie, deeper offset)? If so, it may be from a 76-78 baysplit Brasilia.

Look for the date stamps on the wheels; that will confirm what they are for.

BTW, crows feet is a term that applies to certain bus rims from the late 1950s. At that time there were two wheel suppliers for buses, with one being distinctive because of the three strengthening ribs ("crows feet") around the wheel bolt holes. Both syles were mixed on the production line, so you will often find both styles of wheel on late 50s buses.

The inside of the wheels actually have a date stamp I think, either 4 or 5 /68.... so I guess you are spot on as usual...Baywindow
