Notch meets Square

Greetings everyone

Just returned from Cape Town to a rather wet Pretoria after a very pleasant trip to introduce the Notch to her older sister who lives by the sea. I've attached some pictures of their meeting. Check out some of the cool differences between the 1600A and the 1600L.

Notch performed flawlessly - ran the 2000 odd miles at 65-70 mph and returned an average fuel consumption of 8.3 l/100 km. The 112 000 mile service was done in my old workshop - a.k.a Dad's garage, down in CT and was as routine as can be. And as pretty ladies do, she attracted many approving nods & thumbs-up from passers-by on the N1 and wherever we stopped along the way. In fact, two oomies in Colesberg were so impressed that they abandoned their drinks & bolted from the pub with their eyes on stalks to admire her when we pulled up outside.

Northward from Kroonstad we drove in rain which lasted all the way to PTA. Notch didn't leak too badly - just dripped some water onto my roadmaps which were lying on the parcel tray and collected a puddle of water behind the front seats. She did smell a little damp inside this morning so I would really appreciate a break in the weather and a few sunny days to let her dry out completely.

Regards,

Hi Adriaan,

Thanks for paying a visit. It was an absolute hoot having you here. Next time we need to make it longer. Hopefully then I won't get interrupted by work.

And thanks for those parts again, they are already being allocated work ;)

The pictures don't do that Notch justice, you guys should see it in person. I stuck my head in and it even smelled new.
Even my wife commented that it loos like it rolled off the assembly line yesterday.

Wow! That notch is absolutely stunning! I had the honour and privilege of going for a spin in that very same notch. In fact, that was the first time that i went for a ride in a notchback.Nice one Adriaan :)

Beautiful pics. Sounds like quite a trip.
Was the notch lowered, or were they lower than the square by design ?

Nice when a classic gets used, and not just trailered - RESPECT

If you look carefully, you'll notice that the Corodrive on the pics has a bit of a 'fall' - to the Notch's side

Beautiful cars! Nothing beats a road trip through the Karoo in an a/c VW :hangloose:

Thanks guys for your nice comments - much appreciated :)

To answer your questions: Yes, my dad still owns the Square and they use it fairly regularly when the weather allows - no wet roads etc... Dad bought her from Captial Motors in PTA in September 1969 and she has been in service ever since. Odometer is now at 233 000 miles!!

Neither car is lowered but both has had suspension work done: Square's rear has been adjusted to compensate for sag that developed in the torsion bars and the front axle has also been replaced due to worn needle bearings. Notch arrived with the RR one inner spline higher than the LR so that also had to adjusted. Both are set as close to factory specs as is possible using a bubble protractor, bought from the local hardware, to measure the spring plate angles. The end result is that, when parked next to one another, Square sits slightly nose-high and Notch sits slightly nose-low. Also the Khumo tyres on the notch seem to have a slightly lower profile than the Indias on the square. Maybe thats just my imagination. (Square got new Khumos all round after the pics were taken and I didn't have another opportunity to park them together for more pics :( )

How about we organise a Type 3 get-together as some stage...

Regards,
