In the 1980s CAR magazine published a letter from John Lemon asking for anecdotes and historic pictures for a book he was writing on VW's history in SA. I heard at the time that he had conducted many interviews with old guys who had worked at the Uitenhage factory in the early days. I would love to see that book, but I never heard about it again. Does anyone know if John Lemon has ever actually published any books about VWSA's history?

LOL!! I was corresponding with him a while back but, after I corrected some obvious errors in an article he wrote on VW buses in SA, he stopped replying to me.

Was also wondering if John Lenon ever wrote a book on VWSA's history.
Story was that John only found a shoebox with some papers inside at Uitenhage after VWSA destroyed most of it's aircooled documented history?

The story you are referring to did not involve John Lemon, but another historian, Dr Hans Heese, who told me that VWSA's archive was a store room filled with boxes of documents. He offered to sort and classify everything at his own expense, but VWSA declined. When he next visited, he was told that everything had been thrown out. This happened some time in the 80s or early 90s.

Fast forward to VWSA building its new Auto Pavilion museum; because VWSA knows almost nothing about its own history, it hired John Lemon as its in-house historian.

John is a super guy -
e-mail him, and ask him -

Several of the A/C forum people attended his presentation at Bonny's place at the end of 2005 / beginning 2006 - very nice.
It would be super to have him at the Beetle 75th next year.........
