Dusty - the 68 Squareback barnfind

For about a year, I heard rumors of "Die oom met die ou Volksie onder die boom"

This morning Andre blindsides me with the news that "die Oom" definitely wants to get rid of the car.

Old Volkswagens, willing sellers and my bank overdraft - what a dangerous combination.

A few phonecalls later and we had an address and "die Oom" was available to meet us.

So we closed the shop (in the middle of the day nogal) and trekked out to go and have a look.

What we found was a one owner 68 squareback parked under a car port about 20 years ago because of gearbox problems (it locked in first gear).

The seller is the original owner who bought the car new from Hoopers in Durban. The car is still registered and the license is paid up. He has all the papers.

Some time after the car was parked, they started to sand it down in preperation of a respray, but abandoned the idea.

Now before Blitz has a fit, here are some pictures we took.
(I know this is after the fact, but I just had to add this as found picture)

As can be seen in the pictures, I think that "Dusty" is a very apt name for the car

The interior and trim is still in good condition.

We will have to evict the local rodent from the engine compartment, but all engine openings are properly sealed.
According to the owner, the engine is a factory rebuilt unit that only ran for about 10000km

All the lenses are in this condition. Everything is there including the trim.

This find obviously but a kink in the planning and execution of current projets, as this is too good a deal to pass up.
Our planning is to go and collect the car on Saturday 29 August.

If this was a card game, I'd say 'snap'!

Congrats on your new car - it seems like you posted the pics, while I was typing my post, perhaps we should rename ACVWSA to TypeSA.co.za ?

Your rear engine mount seems to be missing. I have one for you if you need it... Also air filter parts for the twin carb pancake engine, I don't see them in the pic either, got some of those too.

Thanks to all for the kind comments.

The owner showed me a few boxes with all the trim and other parts that were removed. According to him it is all there

Once we have dug the car out from amongst all the stuff around it, we will assess what we have. And then I'll come begging for parts.

Considering the condition of the upholstery, it might even be possible to salvage the interior and just give it a good clean.

If the force is with us, I would like to be able to drive the car to Ferdie's Swop Meet. If not, we'll put it on a stretcher and take it along.

This will now be continued in the projects section.

I'll call it Dusty - the 68 squareback
