The Khaki Cruiser - my latest ride

After what seemed to be an eternity, at last I can post a few pics of my new ride - a 1970 Type 3 Squareback. Saw it for the first time at the George Show earlier this year, and managed to buy it (in spite of a serious setback on the progress of the HW2 build :? ) a while ago. I wanted to go and fetch it in George only by December, but I flew down yesterday afternoon and will take it back to Gauteng over the weekend. Yesterday was a terrible day here in George, with some really bad weather but it was better today, so I gave her a quick wash and took a drive along the coast to see how she goes. The Khaki Cruiser (or KC) is by no means perfect, needs a bit of attention here and there, but I am extremely happy. Thanks to all (who knew beforehand) for keeping your silence, I actually didn't want to announce the purchase before I had the keys in my hand

Unfortunately I do not have a lot of history on this car, but it seems like it spent its first few years in the German town of Cologne, and somehow found its way to South Africa. It had an old (pre-'95) Transvaal 'T' reg number, according to the papers, after which it spent some time in either Knysna or Plettenberg Bay (CX reg), and has been in George for less than two years, hence the 'CAW' registration

The big test will be the 1300km back to Gauteng, which I will tackle over the weekend... will keep you updated.

Footnote - how's this for Deja Vu? I took this pic of my brown 412 at almost exactly the same spot almost a decade ago.. You can see in the difference in the water level the extend of the draught currently in the Southern Cape, I have never seen this river so low as at the moment.

Ebb & Flow bridge, at the Wilderness National Park - one of the rare bridges in the world where the railway line and the road are on top of each other. This is also the route the Outeniqua Choo-Choo train used between George and Knysna.. obviously the train has right of way here.

Wilderness beach.... don't ask

Hey! You've finally revealed your Type 3 Holy Grail. Congratulations Pine, on your Very Sweet Variant!! I love the car, can't wait to see it in the flesh. So, what are the plans for it? Lowering it? Type 4 engine  ? Is it going to be the new daily driver?

Nope, perhaps I am getting old... but for once in my life, I am keeping it 'as is' - no mods. Ironically, the previous owner bought it with the intention of making a pickup out of it  - luckily he focused his attention to a rotary-powered Notch... *phew!*

As for 'daily driver' - no. It is not a practical car for Gauteng traffic, and you have NO IDEA through how many boom gates I go on a daily base - all on the right side of the car, of course!
