So obviously I didnt see it...

But I have a question though....... How the hell do they 'measure' ratings? How do they KNOW how many people actually 'logs on' onto any given channel???? Especially if it is old style Antenna reception..... You TV doesnt transmit back to the braodcasting station..... So HOW THE F... do they calculate ratings? This is one thing that boggled my mind for years now.....

They measure it by the signal strength that is send out.If only a 1000 viewers watch a specific channel, the signal sent is not so high. The more viewers, the stronger the signal has to be.That is measured in inclinations of 1000.

Nowadays with satelite, they know how many people is on one particular channel at any time and those can be measured in ones.

I still dont get it.... To me, there is not logic about it. Once a signal is sent out, it's out....!? So if the signal for 1000viewers was not strong enough in the first place, then the other 50 that was "online" missed out!? I hear what you are saying, but I just dont get it..... Deja Vu... reminds me of my maths teacher trying to teach me "maths logic"...

Satellite TV cant send back a signal to indicate what you are watching, its one way communication in that application, so that wont work.
LOL @ TV signal strength, good one Chris.

AFAIK, it is done like any other market research project. Phone calls, SMS competitions, then extrapolated by using demographics of who would PROBABLY watch that kind of programme/sport/channel etc and statistics compiled.

In the US the Nielsen ratings company actually installs SET Top boxes to record viewing habits,or with CABLE TV decoders they could potentially enable bi-directional communication.

It actually does work like that.

It is the same way power in your house gets used. The more appliances gets switched on,the more power is used.
