Would it be a bad idea to hit that with a paraffin gun? If you have an air compressor and a paraffin gun of course

I have no idea - Would it be a bad a idea ?
There is a thick layer of dirt on, which is probably hiding rust

All my bus drive shaft parts have been put into parrafin for the next 48 hours to soak and loosen all the grease and sand adhereing to the bits.

So loads of very nice parts collected.....I still not talking to you as the bits are nicer than most things I own!

But now.....milestone number 2! Work have started....congrats!

before you buy the rubbers, I have a guy who everyone swears by.
he's based in the uk and accepts paypal,

Dsan please help, all the rubbers were siliconed and nothing left over after I got it out

Will see if I can get the straight axle gearbox fitted over the weekend

I cant get the steering wheel off the shaft, and need to get the steering off of the bus

Get yourselft a cadac mini blow torch, and a rubber mallet.

Heat up where you removed the bolt that holds in the steering wheel and when its nice and hot beat it with the mallet from behind.

What do I need to swap over to the beetle box from the kombi box and why ??

A large bearing-puller may release the steering wheel. Remember to keep the nut on the shaft, to protect the threads.
Use something between the puller's claws and bottom of steering wheel, to prevent damage to steering wheel. The open end of a very large spanner may work.

The ringgear/diff meeds to swapped to the other side, (and backlash checked/adjusted by changing shims, if neccessary). Otherwise you will have 4 reverse gears and one forward.

The 65-67 1500 German buses had taller fourth gear than a beetle, to compensate for the reduction boxes. (0.82:1 instead of 0.89:1 in beetles and Fleetlines). Late 1600 beetles (AS code) has taller diff ratio than kombi, (3.875 instead of 4.125), but has a short 0.93:1 fourth. 1200 and 1300 beetles has short 4.375 diff gearing. Remember that 1500 reduction boxes are 1.26:1, (1200 kombis reduction were 1.39:1).

I saw them pour boiling water into the steering wheel and then whack it with a mallet and off it popped... Good luck!!

Think i used the open end of a 36mm or 46mm spanner to protect bottom of steering wheel.

Like Ron said, maybe use boiling water. Have puller in position, tensioned up. Then pour the boiling water.

Quick update: The safari windows are done, Paint stripper and then some clearcoat on naked frame, started to fit them aswell,








Stripping the front end to make room for the steering raise section




Removed roofrack+ladder to accomodate for lifting the bus at the front to get steering out and giving some workspace underneath, anybody have or know where I can get 4 more of these ?
