nope, me going to a classic car auction is like a drug addict going to a crack house - I'll just walk out poor
I see they have a very cute Triumph Herald, as well as a Daimler Dart, nice 356B Cab, sunbeam, Alpine etc. on second thought - maybe I will go - for educational purposes of course...

I was planning to bid on the 51 Beetle, but the latest installment in my 5-year battle with Jhb City Power has seen me being cut off for the last time; we've decided to get off the grid cold turkey. We've just blown all our savings on solar geyser, paraffin geyser, petrol generator, and next thing is solar panels and I'm busy building a wind generator. That lot is going to suck up all our disposable income for the foreseeable future. No more car buying for me for a while, and I might even sell some of the fleet to finance getting off the grid $u$tainably.

Fig,
you are doing a project I've wanted to do for a long time. The idea of not relying on anyone for energy is brilliant, looking forward to seeing how it works out in the end.

Hey fig
please give me some details, My Father lives on a smallholding out Pretoria east way, they are forever stealing the cables there. He is also wanting to look into sustainable energy.

Fig, don't know if you have seen this. Saw it on telly last year. Works with updraft between buildings. Maybe it can give you some ideas.

Thanks guys, I'll definitley keep everyone posted. I'm trying to make time to write a regular blog on our experience; I'll post the link here as soon as it's set up, hopefully this weekend.
The bizarre thing is Jhb phoned us yesterday demanding that we pay up (they owe me about R12k!!!), while at the same time someone else had us reconnected!?!? The right hand doesn't know what the left is doing! Now that I'm no longer reliant on them I'm making this into a big game. I'm challenging them to sue me so I can tell the story in open court with the press present, since there's no other way to communicate with these uselesses.
First bit of advice: if you want a solar geyser, DON'T buy it from an Eskom-accredited supplier who offers the Eskom rebate. ALL of them were priced between double and triple the price of the one we bought from a non-Eskom accredited supplier, with no Eskom rebate, exactly the same design of solar geyser. The rebate works out to between 10%-15% of purchase price. Looks like another grand South African scam in the making.
When I've got the blog running I'll start a new thread in the Off Topic forum.
