I'm in Cape Town (well at least for 4 more weeks). What do you want to know? There are some great forum member here and also outside who regularly travel to Cape Town.

For parts.....Dave Rowley is probably the person I use locally first but there is also Berg Motors and Volkse Spares. Look under the suppliers link to find out where they are and contact numbers. There is also Calooker on the site that can find most things and sends them down from Johannesburg.

To be honest, when I did the Beetle and Bus, I had to import most of the arts as they just weren't available locally.

As for engines, it all depends on what you want.....if you just want to fix what you have then I would suggest Jurgen but if you want something special....then TonyZ or Dave Rowley might be able to help.

HR & SambaOwner on the site know everyone so they might be able to help too.

On Metal work, Barry is the holy grail! just look under the MetalMeet or Volksrod links.....hey Barry that reminds me we need an update on the V-Rod!

Did you strip the stone chip off as well or leave the underside of the fenders?

67man, your story is about the same as 90% of us other ACVW owners storys.
Most just want a quick respray with a bit of mechanical work.....
This quickly spirals out of control........

Good work thus far 67man. If that is a 1500 (and it looks like one) it is quite a special car. Disk brakes in the front, the first year of the 1500 engine and the four lug rims. A one year only model in RSA.

Looks like you have a car manufactured June 1967, the 114 was the deluxe model, so you should have lots of chrome

I have removed every bit of paint off the panels as i could.

I started with carefully chiseling off all the "new paint" and stone chip until I saw the original colour (ruby red).
Angle grinders and ORBITAL sanders are gold to me, for the angle grinder I bought this strip fibre disc (just over 100 bucks), this scotch brite type disc removes the original paint and body filler with little effort revealing the beautifuly clean metal beneath, but it will only last approx 3panels.

So far I have only applied the Duram NS1 to the badly rusted areas and then sprayed it up with black etching primer. I must still weld and body fill. My dad bought me a thermomax inverter but I found it a big problem trying to get gas for tig welding. (Cant afford to open an account with Afrox). Any IDEAS

A Student budget is kinda for this project.

I am from the northen side of Cape Town, Tygerdal Goodwood.

Ow and I think the engine has been change to a 1600 but not sure and yes I do have alot of chrome.

Im just around the corner from you I stay in Welgelegen.
That Duram NS1 is the for rust
For welding I like to use a Porta Pack oxy acetylene gas welder and braze the panels in place works really well and you can always hire one
You can try Electrogas in maitland for the TIG welding gas mix im sure they do it
