Welcome Johan. PLEASE DON'T SHOUT!
Type 1 engines can't really be welded up once internal parts have been ejected through the case. If your car really is a 57, it would originally have had a 30/36hp engine, which is the earliest VW 1200 engine, and which most people in SA incorrectly call an 1100.
VIN number should be stamped on the tunnel, just in front of the inspection cover under the rear seat. There should also be a VIN plate in the spare wheel well.
