The one that correctly spots/hears/smells/tastes/feels it, will for ever go down in my history books.

Hint:
What is missing because it's no longer needed?

Well done Dutch, so you've been following the thread too :D

For those who are interested, you can read all about it here: http://electricfastback.wordpress.com/

Do you still need forward gears when you use an electric motor?

This particular Fastback still has it's gearbox and clutch assembly.

It is the way I would go with an electric conversion.

My logic would say yes? Going through the gears you would end up with an 'overdrive' mode where top speed can be reached in motion, with minimal load (read: power consumption) on the electric motor.

....right?

I've seen a few in the UK where the keep the box in order to allow higher final drive (speed!) There's one that makes appearances the Santa Pod drag strip and is pretty quick.

I think we need to get some ideas going if we want to keep our bugs and buses going for another 20-30yrs.

I'd rather drive a electric split bus than some a the crap japan is looking at building!
