UK Madness - Somethings...I just don'tunderstand
So explain this......My insurance for Mo in SA was £572 equivalent......I just did the insurance, for Mo in the UK and it's £167. But that includes full breakdown and recovery cover including across Europe. Guarantee value payout.......and the Killer........It includes full insurance for Bobbie with all the breakdown and european cover too!

Wow thats ridiculous! Its probably just capitalism doing its thing. I can imagine that there is a lot more competition in the UK insurance market as well as a much larger market.

Re: Insurance Madness - UK & SA
It's just the difference....SA is about 14 times more....and that's not taking into account the differential in wages versus cost of living... SA petrol is around 55% cheaper

Re: Insurance Madness - UK & SA
In UK everything on a diff level, there is so many power utility companies, mobile phone companies, insurance, you just turn on the telly and there are a 100% insurance ads....I think competition is also a huge factor and also they are regulated correctly, the competition commision in SA is up to shite...
While UK has lots of different suppliers of anything they are regulated properly as well which helps the consumer in the end, here it doesnt work like this. There is a big 4 or 5 in everything, the banks, mobile phone companies, food suppliers, supermarkets etc....oh and only 1 power supplier...we know who that is....

Re: Insurance Madness - UK & SA
SA has no anti-monopoly board in the different industries, it's how vodacom/mtn set prices and various others do the same. Look at banking, which is a joke, here you pay out of your nose for a basic account which is free in most other countries.
The argument about SA being cheaper was right a few years ago but I think those days are numbered. I've been back here 3 years now and noticed how things have increased, basic food prices and utilities.

Re: Insurance Madness - UK & SA
For any one who is interested in insurance on their vw's I pay R4690 for a full year on three cars. The 1956 Split window valued to R150 000, the Karment Ghia R160 000 and the notch R45 000 so I think that it is a good rate and they offer free services too. If you want info please contact me. I am not involved with the company but they seem to be good and we have been using them now for 4 years. Contact via email to

UK Madness - Some crazy things happening!
Something weird is happening......
Look at this, a Beetle roof rack (looking like a nice one),on Ebay with no reserve and didn't even sell for 99p......or R12!
How many of you would have thought I was crazy if I said I was selling a roof rack for R12!

Re: Insurance Madness - UK & SA
Dutch, the difference between Gill&Ron and Ron&Gill is that Gill&Ron is Gill who's not Dutch and Ron&Gill is Ron who is Dutch. Dutch of course isn't actually Dutch.Dutch_Diver wrote:Ron, obvious I should've steered clear of Esure
I was about to chime in with a "you're all missing the fcuking point, it's not the UK insurance that's much cheaper than the SA insurance, it's Dutch's SA insurance is much more expensive than Gill's SA insurance" and Gill got there before me, ata-girl Gill!

Why do you guys always think everybody's better off in the UK? There's nothing wrong with SA. You just have to avoid the rip-off artists and criminals, just like in any other country in the world. Just be proudly South African. There... spoke like a true Dutchman...
