I hope I'm posting in correct section.
have a '77 1600S. It had a strong petrol smell and I discovered that the breather pipe was missing.
I fitted a breather pipe and routed it the correct way (As per another Beetle) but now its losing a lot of fuel through this pipe.
I filled the tank up to "automatic stop" and thought perhaps it was over full.So I drained 5litres out but the problem persists.Any advice?

Is their visual evidence that it's leaking from the breather? Could it also be leaking at the cap? Is the gasket for the fuel gauge sender good? It could also be leaking there.
I don't know the correct routing for the breather pipe, but that may also be your problem.

No,it is the breather pipe.Wet to the touch. What baffles me is the fact that the breather pipe sita at the top of the tank, surely on 3/4 tank fuel should not be reaching there?

Did you use proper fuel-resistant hose for the new breather pipe?

Extend the pipe back to the tank

Had same problem a while back, breather and filler hoses were a bit perished. Went to a hydraulics shop and bought fuel hose, the kind used on petrol pumps, cost quite a bit ~R400 for 0.5m of the smaller diameter and 0.5m of the larger diameter. Installed it and problem solved
