I see that recently quite a few ACVWs have been running these, they are quite expensive, up to R900 per tyre for Continentals...

Would there be a market for a cheaper alternative?

Not Conti or any other name brand, but good quality imported rubber from Japan...

Probably looking at around R600-00 per tyre...

Was quoted 770 by tiger wheel n tyre for the contis...

Cool, they range from R750-00 upto R900-00 depending where you buy from.

If all works out, can probably get them for around R550-R600 per tyre

There is more demand for the Conti's now is higher, they have come down quite a bit, got a price a few weeks back R680 each.
