Aircooled VW South Africa

Hey All

approxamately 3 months ago, I bought a 1972 VW Beetle, White. I decided that it was time to do soome work on it, as the guy who had it before me, installed quite a lot of aftermarket parts - tail lights etc. I have in the interrim managed to get some parts for the car as the budget allowed, and will upload some pictures shortly.

The attachments are the photos of the tail lights before and after I changed them. I have also now re-done the headlights (golf crystal lights with louvred eye lids. I have removed the old wiring harness and installed a new one. I have taken off the old rostyle rims(the previous owner painted them silver) and re-painted them to the original speck. so things are getting to a point now. If all goes well, I will be installing a 1600 twinport motor this weekend.

I was chewing my arms off in search of a 1600 twinport for less than R6000.00, you will be happy to hear that I found it. I found it in the form of a 1973 VW Beetle. I bought the car this weekend for R4000.00. Awesomness. Now, when I am done with the white 1972, I will be restoring the 1973. YEAH!!!

Drove this blue 1973 home on Saturday. Shes been standing for a while, so she needs some slight attention in the form of a good service. Timing needs to be shecked, and the carb needs to be re-set.

She even has a electronic ignition. Still runs with Generator, so I will replace it with the alternator thats on the 1972.

Yeah Man. Will post pics as soon as the swop is done.

Okay, a quick update.

Today, quite a lot got done, the old wiring harnass has been removed. All the new wires are in.
Tailights have been connected. Flicker unit have been replaced. Carbeutor removed. Alternator removed, Exhaust taken off. Manifolds off.

Tomorrow all remaining wires need to be terminated, ready for installation as soon as the 2 engines have been swapped.
I need to install the running boards, thake the manifolds and exhaust off the twinport motor. \thus way ensuring that I can swap the motors on saturday, as I am hoping to drive her on Sunday.

PERFECT!!!!!!!!!!! The twinport is in, the exhaust and everything els is on...now all thats left are the wiring, to be connected, as I decided to re-wire the whole car. The Installation of the new running boards. The front bumper to be fitted, the carb to be adjusted and bob's your aunty.....

All goes well she should start by Friday Night.....I will post photos as soon as she's complete....

Didn't happen, still waiting for the Auto electrician who was supposed to come and help - my dad to be exact. He is still working, so he doesn't really have the time. The lights are all connected. the flickers have been connected. All thats left to do is to pull in the wire form the battery to the ignition, terminate the ignition and connect the wires on the harnass from the flicker unit. Then we can start her. The wait is killing me. I cant wait any more, need her to tun now.

Oh yeah, yesterday, removed the hubcaps from the 63, then saw a strange looking adaptor plate behind the front wheels. Bent down and YES, SCORE!!!!!! the previous owner did a front brake conversion to discs. So if all goes to plan, I should be able to install them on the 71 this weekend.

The conversion seems pretty straight forward, does anybody know whe If there is anything in specific I should look out for before starting this??

good score there on the brakes ! There should not be any suprises in the brake swap , i would clean and regrease before assembly so make sure you have grease and the like.

Bugspray, tsmoked tail lights, I'm gonna dump, so if you want them, you can have them, where you at?, please bare in mind, they are cracked, the prvious owner had no idea what he was doin with them, so the same old problem, screwed them in too deep. and the back plates are also broken, they seem to be quite old. If you still want them, feel free, let me know how and where?

Splitfan, thanks, do es anybody want the old drum brakes coming from the '71, as i will be doing the exchange over the weekend, if all goes well.

Thats nice of you to offer the drums up, just remember you need em to move the blue car

Well smoked tails are becoming hens teeth. If its not major damage I will deff take em.
