How Much Power & How to Use it

I read a post recently about how much power it takes in a Beetle to take on other more "powerfull" and modern cars. If I remember correctly it was about 70 - 80 kw to scare off Bmw's Golf GTI's etc. My question is how to use the power properly. I have a little more power but I usually pull away normally and then put my foot down, what would you more experienced guys say on haw it should be done?
Would love to give some car's a fright but without causing problems to my drivetrain etc.

HAVE A GREAT NEW YEAR !! & I Know next year will be a prosperous one for our VW family !

100hp will scare off almost anything decent and surprise quite a few others

Dont forget that it also comes with lightening the car, lightening the wheels, doing the suspension, brakes....

i was in PE a while ago and I went to check the DRAG action at SCRIBANTE:..

There were a couple of xr6s in top condition...they were chowing everything.

Then a square beach buggy pitched up...sounding very quiet....he line up next to an XR6''interceptor'' the buggy revved into the limiter...on green dropped the clutch...wheels bounching screeching...he outran the ford by a couple of lengths.

Returned to the line....the Ford properly ''heated'' its tyres.

Buggy stayed idling till it was time...same thing with same result.

I went and chated to the two oaks.

the buggy was powered by a standerd 160i egi motor...

It was amazing...that buggy flew and sh@t all over the other cars. Including a
2.0 long block mk1.

Anyhoo what would it cost to get a ac to 80kw rough estimate???

how long is a piece of string? Plenty different combos you can do. Old parts, new parts....

Prob best way to do it is to go 1915cc. You can do it for less than 10K if you want to. To do it properly, you prob talking closer to 15K or more.
To go stroker.... you talking even bigger bucks. Head work also adds. There is also a big difference in the price of an exhaust that will work and a good exhaust.

80kW from a 1600 is possible, not hard too get and cheaper than the 1915. But you do sacrifice reliability. You will be spinning the 1600 close to 7000rpm.

Another problem you face is the carbs. 36IDFs are around R1000 or more. They prob good for about 70kW. You will need 40IDFs and 32 or 34 venturis (non stock size). Hens teeth.

Awesome stuff!! Thanks Tony and Louis love the vid's just wish I could save them to show what beetles can do!

You mention weight reduction Tony what did you do to reduce weight? My Beetle is still stock body and probably heavier because of all the additions. The brake, suspension and wheels have been changed and upgraded to disks all round etc. There was a time when I wanted to start ripping out carpets and rear seat etc but the car is still used to carry the wife and kids to events and around town now and then.

As for your car Louis, as a race car it probably weigh next to nothing. Would be fun to get a road car to that level.

My car have seen a lot of changes since the last dyno and is due for a visit early next year, would love to know what she does these days.

unfortunately my car has not been lightened.... prob got about 50kg in the sound system. The mags are damn heavy too (bloody knock offs). Plus the engine weighs in at about 10kg heavier than stock (I can lift a stock engine onto my workbench - this one I can barely get off the floor). So mine is all power. Now if I could get it to run right.... Louis - I need my parts!!!!

Disc brakes all round may not reduce weight, but they reduce rotating mass, thus increase acceleration speed - like a lightened flywheel would.

Your turbo 1776 should blow away nearly everything on the road.

Thanks Tony but I am to conservative or carefull to take on any car lol.

Had a look at your threads, awesome engine and gearbox u got there! I like the "kafer" kup brace and got a diy traction bar until i install one like that later on.
Would be interesting to see what difference less weight can make though.

Almost a new year . . .

stuck at work, bored out of my skull... no celebrating for me.

The cup brace will get a rework soon, doesnt clear the exhaust. I have thought about making the sub-box out of FG to save about 20kg. And some other bits here and there... If I got fit, I could drop 10kg which would help too....
Thanks for the compliments.

Happy happy

Not nice to be stuck at work this time I am on standby myself but at home at least.

Got off to a bad start for the new year, went for a test drive after some turbo oil drain mods and threw a smoke screen so I will shortly be on the next revision of that system.

Hope you are not stuck at work again.

Regards

you might be feeding too much oil to your turbo - but I dont know too much about them.
Start a thread about your car and your exploits to get it going.....
Still at work, nothing major, only 11 days left, then 3 months off. ;-)

Nice wish I could be off for that long ! I have done some "research" now just need to play around with the configuration a bit. Thanks and good luck with the last few days.

Tony, I'm back at the office tomorrow. Will check on your parts... :) I did not forget.

Dropping weight... there's some really nice stuff available online, but really expensive. I'm talking about flared carbon fiber fenders, bonnet and doors!!

The stuff from CSP looks awesome!!! Come on some one buy these and mould them locally. I really like those flared fenders.
