Remtech engines?

Hi All

New to this forum, looks quite nice though, as I've been following it for some time now. I believe the format is more or less the same as other forums on various other interests on the Web?

My '76 Volksie is in desperate need for a new engine, and I saw in an overseas publication that Remtech engines are being exported from SA?

Can a member of the public buy one, and what is the price more or less for a 1600 twin port sub-assembly, on exchange?

PS Wrt my username I'm not a smoker myself, but the Beetle has turned into a chainsmoker the past few months - blowing smoke all over its water cooled family members on the roads, thus the nick.

Hey Smoke,

RemTech engine's, very stupidly, are NOT available to ZA citizens unless you can wangle some sort under-the-table deal somewhere...

In any case, they do NOT have a good reputation, and I have heard countless stories of RemTech engines dying pre-20k kms...

Unconfirmed - just what > I < have heard.

There are few places I would trust with a recon VW engine, mainly due to the amount of times they have been cut...best I leave suggestions to the others around here. :)

For a decent recon, I'd say budget 5k - 8k.

Btw, Deep Purple - Smoke On The Water is a real classic. ;) G'd stuff...

I know a guy in PE who does engines and deals with remtech sometimes. He refers to them as "monkeys living in a back yard"

Not my opinion, I never dealt with them.
I have had the manager of Volkspares London ask me about them as well, complaining about their reputation

I've had very bad experiences with Remtec engines in split buses, and I don't drive my buses over 100km/h and I don't let my engines get too hot. They all seem to develop excessive end float early in their lives and self destruct around the 25-30K km mark. I could go into endless details of the horrors of successive Remtec engines but I won't bore you.

I don't think Remtec are any worse than any of the mass engine rebuilders out there. Your best bet is to have a trusted engine builder rebuild your engine. The extra cost is always worth the saved hassle.

no no no to remtec, I got one through a deal with VW princess park in Pretoria as part of a sorry package after the way that they treated me. I got 3 before I ended up with one that didn't give me grief.....

1st one has silicone in the oil passage and that cooked the motor.

2nd one had a bad dizzy gear that they tried to blame on me........

3rd one I never found out as I sold the car........
