We have just bought a 69 lowlight double cab which we intend to rebuild as a show vehicle for our business. It has all the fittings and goodies minus a small window knob.
Not much rust as well.
Will need a window rubber kit as well as a new load bin top as someone cut a huge hole in the old one.
plan on fitting either a Subaru or a MX6 motor in it with a 2.0 gearbox.
Despite us being in the carbon fibre game we intend on keeping the look old school.
Any suggestions to who can sand blast or media blast in Gauteng ?
Have a look at what we slowly doing by visiting our web page on its build:

Thanks for the replies, will try post pics here but will also have pics on our company web site, even though its a composite race kayak building company we have added a personal touch such as the 1979 BMW R100RS with 359 000km on it that we also built from frame up which so many enjoyed even though they not bikers. Sure this will be the same and maybe it inspires to re-build instead of scrap metal. We have two lathes which work perfect, they 60 years old each. So yes we in a modern high tech world building high tech top of the range kayaks and paddles and all our other stuff is restored stuff at times older than me. Nuts.
BUT MUST SAY THANS AS THIS SITE APPEARS TO BE A HELPFUL BUNCH

Nice, it looks solid from what I can see in the pictures! Keep us updated as you go along!!
Does it still have an aircooled engine in?

Its quite solid, only rust replacement is a piece below the right side cab near the chasis, but easy to fabricate with a plate bender.
No engine or gearbox with it.
We looking at a subaru 2.0 turbo motor on the weekend from a roll over car.
Then will start stripping for sand blasting which will let us know how bad rust is.
Fortunatly we export carbon stuff to Australia and UK so can get stuff sent over if need be.
Where is the best place to look for VW kombi stuff in RSA?
Found door / window rubbers at VOLKSPARES.

From the pictures it is not a 69. Looks like 71/72 crossover but some of the other members will know better. Still looks nice though.

From the original and later registration documents plus other documents I got with it shows it is a 1969 model.
The rear lights are not original as someone has hacked a hole to fit them which will be closed and correct ones fitted.

Just had a brain wave or brain fart, not sure which one yet.
What if due to the extra space avalable in a double cab as the cab is half size and most of the load bin underneath is wasted that if you mounted a subaru engine mid ships to a fused gearbox and diff to make a shorter unit and ran the rear suspension instead of the original kombi axle so that the layout would be the same as in the original Subaru except shorter ?
The largest problem I see is the gear linkages.

ok a bit more.
Just wondering if its do-able taking into account we have a decent workshop set up?

Well I managed to basically get the whole mechanics minus body shell of a Subaru imprenza from front to back, now after some playing on sizes it looks like we can do what we want plus add independent suspension up front based on the stuff we got including the ABS system.
What I need find here in RSA is a 5 a speed cable shift gear change for the Subaru gear box.
