Hi Guys

Can some one help, I want to find out if type4 (411) front brakes can be fitter to the drum brake type 3, also will the rear drums fit.

Forget da rear it will not work. The front can work but not a bolt on. Bearings need 2 be matched up forget the original caliper as da early pads are no longer available use a golf 1 caliper you will need custom caliper brackets use only da hub disk combo if u can find a good set. I have used 1400 nissan PU and 67 beetle disk as well

If it is a mid '68 or '69 Type 3 the front wheel bearings will be the same. (SKF 108 I think.) Not that this matters much because the steering knuckles will have to be changed as well. The disc diameter is a little more but not a problem when using the standard ATE calipers. The disc is also a bit thicker which means it can be machined to spec for the Type 3. The calipers are not the same. Good luck finding a set of decent Type 3 calipers - and even if you do, they'll most probably need rebuilding. Think $$! If the caliper pistons are corroded, forget it - they are unique to this particular caliper and NLA from just about every brake place I've tried. EMPI supplies a universal replacement caliper for Type 3's - meaning it may be fitted to either side. Seems like the only option at the moment. More $$$ but maybe less than having a set rebuilt locally. I have ordered a set from Volkspares so will know more later.

As far as I know the rear brake assemblies are also not interchangeable. The brake drums are definitively not - been down this road already. Good, used 4x130 Type 3 rear drums are few and far between although I have managed to find a NOS one last year... Once again EMPI can supply new drums. Think mega $$$$!! Have heard they may need a little machining before being used. Ordered a set so will know more soon. You'll also need the hub plate that the wheel bolts go into. Happy searching... EMPI lists them in their catalogue but they had been discontinued when I made inquiries.

Thanks, what i have decided to do is remove the whole suspension front from the Variant pck up and fit it we will do the same at the rear as it also has a swing axle gearbox, will refit the 5x205 drum set up to the pick up. They are all still working great in the pickup.

I have 1x Type 3 caliper if anyone wants it. I know that it's seized but who knows what the insides look like, could be rebuildable.

I have 2x Type 3 calipers for my own car, LUCKILY the bores/pistons were still decent, just honed them out and fitted new seals.
