Re: Fiat 126p
I think I just want to make it as reliable as possible when I get it initially.... will definitely start a "Project" once under way

Re: Fiat 126p
I had an original aircooled fiat 500 for all my collective sins, I tell you!
it is the biggest single piece of motoring shit that I have ever known. - and the engine looked the same as the pics you posted!
-- gave it away!
The 600 was watercooled and a much nicer car - you could get all sorts of Arbarth gofaster bits for it.
Although it has little semblance to the old 500, I still want to throw up when I see a new 500
But, I still like the Strada bakkie, lots of the new ones, old 125, 124 special etc etc---- but that 500---NaNaNa!

Re: Fiat 126p
Some updates:
MOST of the bolts holding the gearbox/engine to the body were missing. 3 bolts fell off the starter. One shock bolt broke off... Exhaust brackets broke and caused the exhaust studs to strip threads..... Looks can be deceiving... but yes I'm giving it a go.... VERY simple design....
The journey continues...

Does not look to bad........
Its much like a vw, by the time you have all HER addressed, and understood, you start to enjoy her, only problem with a Fiat, She's more "kliengevoelig"
Enjoy....and good work.

Re: Fiat 126p
Nice read....
I like the European Fiats, unfortunately Fiat got a bad wrap as their cars were not designed for Africa,
My Old Fiat 500 SW was always the talk of the town, every body wanted to drive in it, and it was a chic magnet.

Re: Fiat 126p
Still working on it...
Driving the Skoda at the moment and working on the Fiat when I get a chance....
These are my updates from another forum:
Brakes were pulling to one side.... Fuel gauge wasn't working.....

Well OK this is what I found:
(Remember, left side was braking more than right side)
Right side>
[im]https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-79MM ... CF8207.JPG[/img]
Left side>
Both cylinders seemed to move freely. Could the difference be because of the different types/sizes of brake shoes/wheel cylinders? They are not identical both sides...
Both brakes and fuel tank "anomolies" have been fixed.;D
Well... I keep on getting these lovely presents from my Maluch in places that aren't visible from outside:
Mismatched brakes, missing starter bolts, numerous missing gearbox mounting bolts, snapped off studs, cracked exhaust brackets....
& now:
fuel sender held by only two bolts and a leaky float:
Can't give up now! ;D

Next... remove carpets & seats:
VW's don't rust.... remember this is an '82... that is my lawn you are seeing through the floor Damn I wish I had a MIG welder...
The hole was filled with filler, covered with masking tape, and the tape was rubberised from below..

Re: Fiat 126p
Well spotted on the grapes... They've been very good this year too.. Its the first grapes that I've come across that actually smell like grape chewing-gum. Very strong sweet smell. Still don't know what it is but if there is any more around when I get back from SA, I'll try to make some wine. I've got loads of pears, apples, raspberries & plums in the yard as well...
It's very much sustenance living over year... The village only got mains water 2 weeks ago
