if your wiring harness is the Empi generic one, take it back. they have a bad rap for poor quality wiring and too thin insulation.
Your better bet would be to buy a harness for a Mk1 golf and extend the wires - they use the same colours as the beetle.

Wiring is always measured in mm2. To note though, 1.5mm2 wires are no longer 1.5mm2 in area. It began as a size to current capability, i.e. originally it took a 1.5mm2 wire to carry a 16A load safely. Todays materials are better so the same wire size can now handle higher current, but the "standards" were set, so today, any wire capable of carrying a 16A load is 1.5mm2 even if it actually only measures 0.75mm2
Maybe this is what you are seeing with the wires you bought from GHS??

Thanks Tony.
The harness is one that Volkspares make up themselves and not an Empi one. The colours are not correct according to the online diagrams as they only have solid colours.

Remember also that the old vehicles were 6V and subsequently the current was higher as well.
With 12V the current is lower and you can use thinner wire.

Think wiring route was easier and shorter on older rhd beetles. From fusebox/switches/warning lights, loom towards the rear goes up via right upper pillar into roof. Then straight back down right rear pillar to engine, and rear lights.
Do'nt assume anything- (While doing fault-finding).

Think only the brake light switch on the MC has to be extended for RHD.

Just remember that the old wires only had a few strands of thick copper in them, the new AUTO wire has ten times more strands, yes thinner, but as current is carried on the outer surface of a conductor, they have more surface area, so that why the wire is thinner.

Alrighty, just a bit of an update.

Did the brake lines, only need to do two more on the rear wheels, but can only do that once the drums are in place.
After bending all the brake pipes, except for the two in the rear, I managed to mess up the smallest and easiest pipe, the 200mm one also at the rear.
There is a tab on the chassis to secure something in place, I googled and couldnt find what needs to go there as I initially thought it was for the brake line. All the results did not have this tab and all brake lines that had to go over the chassis section just went straight, so I ended just making mine straight as well.
Also got all the body to pan rubbers in place and ready to go.

Started with the Laykold tape sound proofing, already making a massive difference to an empty shell. Also did the roof, which surprisingly looks the neatest even though I had to work upside down and used the 150mm wide tape.
Still need to do a few more spots.
I will admit the rest was not done very neatly, pretty hard to pull this stuff off once it has touched the surface. Working in shorts and getting your leg hair constantly stuck to this is also not very lekker. Lucky all this will be covered.

Then finally got the body back on the pan. body to pan holes line up nicely except for one hole not wanting to line up at the rear shock tower.
While the body was off the pan I took the opportunity to fill up and close any body seams and joins that were not properly filled just in case some water gets its way into there.

Thanks guys :hangloose:

Busy 'dry' fitting everything to double check that it lines up and fits before the interior can begin.

Installed a short shifter over the weekend but can not find 3rd and 4th gear.
Reverse, 1 and 2 is smooth and easy. Spent a good couple of hours adjusting the plate and trying to find 3rd and 4th without luck.

Removed the shifter and shift rod and I can only engage reverse with the hockey stick directly on the box which will eliminate fault at the coupler or rod.
The box has no oil in it and has not had oil in it for very a few years. I still need to get the axle booties on and also torque the drums on the axles. But thats not going to happen soon as I still have some work to do on the drums.

Any advice ? Do I need to pull the box and nosecone to check gears, or is there something Im missing ?
