Aircooled VW South Africa

Goofing around on the oval and trying to make some arm rests based on the original looking ones.
I started with this but got caught up with the carpets and door panels. My father took over the job.

It ended up looking a bit puffy and bulky. Going to try and take some of the sponge out and try again.

My arm rests only had foam on top, not on the sides, if that helps.

Removed the sponge and all the foamalite and gave it a go.
This is what I came up with, and I used some builders wharehouse alliminium trim to finish it off.





Onto the next one...

Now that looks as good as new. Well done on a nice job.

Last thing to go on and giving the most trouble, the bonnet. Im guessing this got warped. Is there some way of bringing it back. It has too much bend in it, the bottom edge hits the valance. Its nice and flush on top with an even gap. The middle section needs to 'straighten' out a bit.

That bonnet may be no better than the one you have. Seems most of these older cars suffer from this

How about tying a ratchet strap around the bonnet in the middle and catefully pulling the sides in little bit. That might straighten it out a bit

Decided to use some force as buggyfan suggested.
Looks better but still not nice and snug when strap is released.

You will need to over bend a bit more every time till it jumps back to the right shape.

Had to do same to MeFusco, but needed to do the two body sides as well to get the right fit.

Having a nightmare of a time with the brakes.

I poured the brake fluid into the reservoir and left it overnight.
Every single connection on the braking system was leaking. Spent quite some time ensuring I have a leak free system only to find that the WW reservoir had a pin hole underneath the bracket.
Got it fixed up and connected it all again.
Then I noticed the handbrake was not working anymore, after some inspection and removing the rear drums I noticed they were full of brake fluid. The bleed valves' threaded part actually sits inside between the backing plate and the drums, and I probably opened them to far and got the brake fluid everywhere.
Cleaned it all back up and together again...
Started bleeding the brakes again, pedal is pressed and there is def pressure, while the pressure is applied I slightly open the bleeder, the pedal goes all the way in and before it is released I close the bleeder.
But after doing that I can press the pedal to the floor, no pressure. After waiting a few seconds there is pressure again.

I noticed a vacuum sort of sound at the cylinder, its as if the piston in the master cylinder does not immediately return and gets stuck somewhere.
It is not a constant vacuum, probably about 2-3secs and then I can hear it release and also after about 10+ seconds after the pedal was depressed fully to the floor.

I did check the push rod length and 1mm gap before the rod pushes against the piston.
I was also told to adjust the brakes so that they are fully engaged with the drum before bleeding.

Is this a faulty MC, is there a possible air lock/vacuum, any advice ?
Its a single cylinder, I have the discs upfront and drums at the rear.

It could be you are pushing the piston too deep.

Your peddle stop must stop the peddle about 2 mm before you hit the back wall of the MC.

If you do not do this, you can get the piston jammed as well as tearing the cup seals.

The master cylinder can be suspect. Is it a rebuild or a new item?

I was also having brake issues on my westy with single circuit master cylinder that wasn’t releasing pressure at times. I would get it to seem fine and after some driving I was binding again. Eventually ditched the rebuild master cylinder in desperation and I rebuild another one myself which works fine. I’ve dismantelled the professional rebuild one without spotting any issues on it yet.
