OK, here's an update...

After the police, fingerprint-guys and investigators were there, it is clear that it is not related to this site.
I have recovered some minor items in the vineyards...and it seems that it is an "inside job" by people who work on the farm...
They had enough time to watch the SP very closely and execute this while the wind was howling!
Afterall, everyone here at Aircooled only have positive contributions...and no vindictive motives!
Thanx Bushpig for getting the word out there...I have also put-up a cash reward and these small farm communities have a way of spilling the beans very quickly!
Apart from the viscious white wolf with yellow eyes(husky/wolf cross) I picked-up yesterday, I also fitted a new immobiliser and alarm to the SP.
Thanx Pine, Jolas, Bugger, Retrovan and Bushpig for your support.....BIG-UP TO YOU GUYS!!!!
If these A-holes decide to come back, the white-wolf will be waiting in anticipation!!!!!! Woof!!!

I have just been given my mother-in-law's SP1600. I am doubtful as to whether or not it is a genuine SP. It has the gauges, the steering wheel, a 14" Rostyle as a spare (but the others have been repaced with Smiths). But it bugs me that the seats are not tartan - they are grey elephant corduroy. Also, the rear valance has the cutouts for the exhaust. Twin carbs are long gone. Also has the rear louvre and the SP decals. It is Senegal Red. Does anybody have any ideas how to check if it is an SP or not? I want to restore it, but I don't want to do so if it is not genuine.

I'm with Jolas on this one.......show us the pics!

It would be absolutely amazing if it truly is an SP.
I still have the original owner's manual (still in afrikaans!!) .
You should definitely restore her.....she's way too rare to just let go...or modify

As VW never kept records of any of their special editions it will be extremely difficult (likely impossible)to determine whether the car is an original SP or not.
The rear valance were of very thin fiberglas and was just held in place by the rear fenders and was easily removed when installing a std silencer (from what the dealer told me in 1986 I bought the last SP silencer in 1986)
the front spoiler required holes in the body with pop rivits and the holes (or the evidence that it was repaired) should be there
all the trim wasnt unique to the SP (black out trim) as it was shared by the fun bug and the jeans bug.
as the factory used a hole saw to drill the holes for the gauges this would possibly be the only place where one could determine if the body was used by VW. looking at the Photos I have no reason not to assume that your car could be the genuine item. The tartan trim was not very durable and was usually replaced after a while as it wore out very quickly. A possible source for similar material is Rob Roy's in JHB

Hey Impi

Thanx for the info, the tartan I have is still in a great condition, just a little faded.

I went to a Scottish Tartan Expert in Cape Town to try and find the right material for a possible future replacement.
According to him VWSA had a custom weave made for the SP and if I want to replace the tartan, it will have to be custom weaved again in the Scotland factory.
I got feedback from Scotland and apparently they have to shut down the factory for 2 days just to do the setup on this weave and thickness.
Needless to say that I will not be paying that setup fee for 10 square meters minimum......hahaha

The fun bug also came with all the gages and steering but no spoiler, twin carbs or fibre glass rear vallance.
For what it's worth, ignorance has no limits ......

To my surprise, when I bought the Spyder Replica, I found among the spares an SP1600 badge and noticed that all the gauges were built into the dash of the Spyder and the original SP1600 twinport engin, gearbox, etc was used to create the Porsche.
Luckilly, the Spyder is a pet-project so I got lots of original spares for the SP.
Never thought I'd get SP-stuff with the Spyder.

You mention that it is Senegal Red. Where did you get the reference from?
There's a lot of speculation regarding the colour.
Some refer to Racing Red, African Red & Senegal Red...
